DETAILED WORK INSTRUCTION
1 Preparation
1.1 Please make sure all Aggreko HSE Standards and Risk Assessments applicable with
the tasks in this document are followed.
1.2 Ensure that the Transformer is due for service/inspection.
1.3 Before B Service is carried out, make sure that visual inspection as per Work
Instruction P06300336 have been completed.
DANGER
Hazard of electric shock, explosion or arc flash. Failure to follow these instructions will result in
death or serious injury. Internal maintenance must be performed only with the transformer de-
energized, isolated and with all the terminals grounded.
IMPORTANT
All personnel that isolate energy sources must be competent and authorised in accordance
with the Aggreko Energy Safety Rules (minimum level of authorisation under ESR’s is LOTO
LV) and must have a valid individual Letter of Electrical Authorisation (LEA).
1.4 Isolate the genset from all energy sources in accordance with the Energy Safety Rules
and LOTO procedures.
1.5 Use an approved test probe and proving unit to test the equipment for dead.
1.6 If unsure, please consult the Line Manager for more clarity.
2 Transformer Internal Visual Inspection
2.1 Open primary and secondary terminal boxes and both access covers.
2.2 Visually inspect internal constructions, walls, doors, cowers of enclosure. Any damage
found must be repaired or scheduled for repair. Corrosion and foreign objects must be
removed.

2.3 Check all terminals and ground connections condition. If rust or corrosion is present
(see Figure 1 and Figure 2), determine and if possible eliminate the cause. It can be
doors, covers or cables entry holes with inadequate sealing (Figure 3), damaged
enclosure. If the site environmental condition is accelerated corrosion cause, consult
line manager for additional countermeasures (applying internal heaters, covering the
transformer, location change, etc.) or reduce service interval.
Figure 2
DANGER
Failure to property ground the transformer will result in serious personal injury or death.
2.4 Visually inspect cabling for cuts, cracks, abrasions, colour and heat stress. Ensure the
cable entry is sealed. Cables must not touch sharp edges.

2.5 Visually inspect winding core. Check for rust, corrosion, and deterioration of the
insulation, varnish or paint wear. Check for signs of overheating and tracking or
carbonization marks and the general condition of the transformer. Any deterioration
must be reported to the Line Manager to coordinate further actions.
Figure 4
3 Cleaning
3.1 Use compressed air to blow off any dust and dirt particles from the transformer.
3.2 Use clean dry rag to clean off any remains after compressed air cleaning.
3.3 Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that might have accumulate inside the
compartments and confined areas.
3.4 Clean terminal boxes using vacuum cleaner and clean dry rags.
IMPORTANT
For harsher environments where there is dust, metallic particles or chemical fumes, excessive
dust, moisture, snow, etc a more frequent inspection and cleaning should be carried out .

4.4 Remove any corrosion from the taps and cable terminals with a wire brush.
4.5 Use the Insulation Resistance Tester and set to 500 V. connect probes to primary taps
of the input winding (delta connection) L1-L2, L2-L3, L1-L3, L1- earth bolt, L2- earth
bolt, L3- earth bolt.

4.7 To perform testing between primary and secondary windings using extension cables
connect probes to the tabs on the different sides of the transformer: L1-I1, L1-I2, L1-I3,
L2- I1, L2-I2, L2-I3, L3-I1, L3-I2, L3-I3.
4.8 Run each of the tests for 60 sec. Resistance should be equal or greater than 300 MΩ.
If the readings are less than 300 MΩ dry the windings and test again. If the reading
remains under 300 MΩ inform your Line Manager.
4.9 Remove earth bolts, clean out rust and any corrosion with wire brush.
4.10 Restore earth bolts and all removed before cables. Using torque wrench tighten all
taps, earth bolts, bus bar terminals and CB connections with the correct torque
according to the table in Figure 10.
Figure 10
4.11 Switch both CB's ON.
4.12 Close all doors and covers.
5 Job Completion
5.1 Clear the work area of all tools, test equipment and rags.
5.2 Complete B service report.
5.3 Complete B service sticker and attach it to the terminal box door.
5.4 Remove all locks and tags.
5.5 Inform the Site OS that all work has been completed and transformer ready for
operation.
5.6 Release unit back into operation.
