DTCE 113 ENGINEERING SURVEYING 1

TEST 1

DATE: Sunday 5th October,2025.

TIME ALLOWED: 2 HOURS 15MINUTES.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES.

• The test consists of FOUR QUESTIONS


• Answer ALL the questions.
• Begin each question on a fresh page
• You are bound to all the examination rules, regulations and guidelines.
• Any form of examination malpractice may lead to cancellation of the test
results and dismissal from the course.

Question One

(a) What do you understand by the term surveying (02 marks)

(b) With examples, explain any three principal types of surveying. (06 marks)

(c) Mr. John Bosco a resident of Jinja has contracted you to survey a particular piece of land on
which he wants to construct his house. Describe the several steps and guidelines followed to ensure
a successful field survey work. (12 marks)

Question Two

Students studying Geomatics Engineering in a Technical College carried out fieldwork to survey
a road in a village using chaining method but the road is passing through buildings, rivers and
forests.

(a) With the aid of a neat sketch, explain how the students would be able to chain through the
mentioned obstacles. (12 marks)

(b) A survey line CD intersects a building to overcome the obstacle, a perpendicular DE, 87m long
is set out at D. From E, two lines EF and EG are set out at angles 500 and 650 respectively with
ED.

(i) Find the lengths EF and EG such that points F and G fall on the prolongation of CD. (06 marks)

(ii) Find the obstructed distance DF. (02 marks)

Question Three

In a field work while chaining the road, the surveyors encountered a sloping ground which is very
steep.

(a) Explain three types of errors that will be detected after the exercise, giving one example on
each. (08 marks)

(b) Illustrate how the length will be obtained using a direct method. (08 marks)

(c) A line was measured by a 20m chain before starting the day's work. After chaining 900m, the
chain was found to be 6cm too long. After chaining a total distance of 1,575m, the chain was found
to be 14cm long. Find the true distance of a line. (06 marks)

(a) Define the following terms as used in levelling


i) Reduced level

ii) Bench mark

iii) Back sight

iv) Fore sight (@ 1 mark)

(b) The given data below was obtained after doing Mr. John Bosco’s survey work. Study it
carefully and answer the questions that follow.
