Roof Garden Layering Study in Malaysia

The document outlines the components and functions of green roof systems in Malaysia, detailing layers such as vegetation, drainage panels, and waterproofing membranes that support plant growth and building integrity. It also discusses the design of roof gardens, including drainage systems and raised floor considerations. Additionally, it includes information on curtain wall assemblies and acoustic ceiling designs suitable for seminar halls.

Study on the layering of roof gardens:

Green Roof Layer Functions (Malaysia Context)

1. Vegetation + Engineered Growing Medium (15–30cm)

→ Provides a growing environment for plants, ensuring root stability, water retention,
and adequate drainage while supporting Malaysian climate flora.

2. Filter Fabric (Geotextile 150 g/m²)

→ Prevents fine soil particles from washing into and clogging the drainage layer,
maintaining proper water flow.

3. Drainage Panel / Composite Cell

→ Facilitates efficient water drainage and temporary water retention, preventing root
rot and relieving excess load during heavy rain.

4. Protection Mat
→ Shields the waterproofing membrane from mechanical damage during installation
and maintenance.

5. Root Barrier (integrated or separate)

→ Prevents aggressive roots from penetrating and damaging the waterproofing
membrane below.

6. Waterproofing Membrane (PVC, TPO, Root-resistant)

→ Creates an impermeable layer that prevents water from infiltrating the building
structure and ensures longevity.

7. Insulation Board (XPS, 8–10cm, water-resistant)

→ Provides thermal resistance to reduce heat transfer into the building, improving
indoor comfort and energy efficiency.

8. (Optional) Vapour Barrier (if insulation is below)

→ Prevents moisture from the building interior from condensing within or beneath
the insulation layer, preserving thermal performance.

9. Reinforced Concrete Slab (Load-bearing)

→ Acts as the structural base that supports the entire green roof system, designed to
bear the dead and live loads above.
