KEY FACTS REGARDING RAMSAR SITES
• Ramsar Convention is an international treaty signed in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran, for the conservation and sustainable
use of wetlands. The number of Parties to the Convention is 173 (2025)
• The world’s first Ramsar site was The Cobourg Peninsula in Australia, designated in 1974
• Bolivia has the largest area under Ramsar protection, while the United Kingdom has the most Ramsar Sites (175)
• India has 94 Ramsar Sites across 25 States & UTs (as of November 2025), covering over 13.6 lakh hectares
• Oldest site – Chilika Lake was the first site (1981) in India to be designated under the Ramsar Convention (1981)
• Largest site – Sundarbans is the largest Ramsar site in India having area of 423,000 ha, covering mangrove forests
& home to Royal Bengal Tiger.
• Smallest site – Renuka Wetland, in Himachal Pradesh (20 ha), is a sacred and ecologically important lake in the
foothills of the Himalayas
• Northernmost – Wular Lake (Jammu & Kashmir): 34°15′N – One of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, fed by River
Jhelum.
• Southernmost – Suchindram-Theroor Wetland Complex (Tamil Nadu): 08°09′N – Coastal wetland near
Kanyakumari
• Westernmost – Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary (Gujarat): 70°08′E – Coastal wetland near Jamnagar, Gulf of Kutch.
