Dear Sir,

Technical Clarifications

We refer to your letter bearing reference, and provide the following clarifications seriatim.

1. The design intent is for the beams to function as continuous members, which
confirms your understanding.
2. The requested drawings (stitching details, top reinforcement at supports, cross-girder
reinforcements) will be submitted in due course. These drawings are not
prerequisites for commencing the in-situ or precast bridge construction works.
3. As shown in the previously submitted precast beam reinforcement drawings, the
design does not incorporate pull-out bars from the main beams.
4. The use of precast slabs was incorporated into the design following a constructive
discussion with the Contractor to accommodate his preferred construction
methodology.
5. Your understanding is correct. The cross-girders are designed to sit directly on the
permanent bearings.
6. The construction sequence does not require any lowering of the cross-girders onto
the permanent bearings. The intended construction sequence is as follows:
a. Construct the bearing blocks following completion of the trimmer beams.
b. Erect the temporary supports for the precast beams and install the
permanent bearings on the bearing blocks.
c. Install the precast beams onto the temporary supports.
d. Reinforce and shutter the cross-girders in-place, stitching the precast beams
to them. The cross-girders will be cast, and bear, directly on the permanent
bearings. The formwork will be struck after curing.
e. Install the precast slabs, prior to reinforcing and shuttering the in-situ deck
slab.
f. Remove the temporary supports from under the precast beams following
completion of the deck slab.
A set of formwork drawings for the cross-girders is herewith enclosed for clarity.

The temporary supports for the precast beams form part of the Contractor’s
Designed Portion of the Works. The Engineer remains available to assist the
Contractor in developing a feasible solution.

7. The contractual matters shall be dealt with under a separate cover.

We trust that the above clarifications are satisfactory and reiterate our request to have a
technical meeting to sort out any outstanding and unresolved query at your ends.

Yours faithfully,
