The sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called 'Vav' (pronounced 'vahv') and has the sound

of 'v' as 'vine'.

In modern Hebrew, the letter Vav can appear in three forms:

What is the meaning of this broken Vav?

The story in Numbers chapter 25 is about Phineas (the grandson of Aaron, the priest) and his
zeal to remove the evil from Israel, driving a spear through a man who was
fornicating with a Moabite woman. Because of Phineas' act, God stopped the plague and
Israel was delivered from destruction. From a messianic point of view, we can see that
Phineas is a type of Yeshua, for it is written that 'he was zealous for his God and made
expiation for the people of Israel" (Numbers 25:13).

On a 'sod' level we can further think of this broken Vav as an image of


the breaking of the Messiah for our definitive liberation. How so? Well, since
the Vav represents the number of man, the broken Vav represents a man who is
broken. In this particular verse, the man was broken because of a covenant
of peace that brought atonement for Israel - another image of the Messiah Yeshua and his
final liberation for us.

6. The Vav, Messiah, and New Creation


When God first created the 'generations' of heaven and earth, the word toledot (‫)תודלות‬
It is used (Gn 2:4). It refers to the order created before the sin and the fall of Adam and Eve.
After the fall of Adam, however, the word is written differently in the text.

The Letters of the Alphabet–Vav: Connection


In the beginning of Creation, when the Infinite Light filled all of reality, God contracted His Light.

of the alphabet, dealefatav. Our Wise interpret the word in this verse as a
inclusion of all the diverse objects of Creation present in the sky and on earth.
In biblical Hebrew, the letter vav also has the function of inverting the apparent tense of a
verb for its opposite— from the past to the future and from the future to the past
hahipuch). The first appearance of this type in the Torah is the letter that begins the twentieth
second word of the account of Creation, "And God said...". This is the first pronouncement
explicit among the ten statements of Creation: "And God said [the verb 'to say' being
