IB Grade 8 Science – Summative Assignment

Unit: Nutrition
Task: Report or Presentation on Malnutrition

You will complete a summative assessment on malnutrition. You may choose one of the following formats:

Option 1: Written Report (minimum 500 words)

Your report must include:

Definition of malnutrition (under-nutrition and over-nutrition).


Causes of malnutrition (social, economic, dietary, lifestyle).
Consequences of malnutrition (short- and long-term effects on health, e.g., osteoporosis, anaemia, obesity, diabetes).
Case Study – choose one real-world example (for example: vitamin deficiencies in children, obesity in teenagers, or famine-related
malnutrition).
Solutions/Recommendations – propose strategies at both personal and community/societal levels.
Conclusion – explain why understanding nutrition is important for long-term health and well-being.
Length: At least 500 words (typed, double-spaced).

Option 2: Oral Presentation (5–7 minutes)

Your presentation must cover the same content as the report.

Use slides, visuals, or props to support your points.


Speak clearly, use scientific vocabulary, and maintain good audience engagement.
Both formats will be graded using the same rubric.
