National Civilian Awards Bharat Ratna
• It is the highest Civilian Award of the country, was instituted in the year 1954.
• It is awarded in recognition of exceptional service / performance of the
highest order in any field of human endeavor. .
On conferment of the award, the recipient receives a certificate signed by the
President and a medallion. The award does not carry any monetary grant.
• First recipients of the Bharat Ratna were C Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli
Radhakrishnan and CV Raman.
Important Facts Related to Bharat Ratna –
As of (October, 2020) this award has been bestowed upon 48 individuals,
including 16 who were awarded posthumously.
Sachin Tendulkar (awarded in 2014) is the youngest recipient while D. K Karve
(awarded in 1958) is the oldest recipient of this award.
"Mother Teresa (awarded in 1980) is the first naturalized Indian citizen to win
this award, while Indira Gandhi (awarded in 1971) is the first woman to
receive this award. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Awarded in 1987) and Nelson
Mandela (awarded in 1990) are two foreigners who won this award ..
MS Subbalakshmi (awarded in 1998) was the first musician to win this award ”

PADMA VIBHUSHAN It is the second highest civilian award in the Republic of
India. It consists of a medal and a citation and is awarded by the President of
India.
It was established on 2 January 1954. It ranks behind the Bharat Ratna and
comes before the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
It is awarded to recognize exceptional and distinguished service to the nation in
any field, including government service.
The first recipitants of this award were Satyendra Nath Bose, Nand Lal Bose,
Zakir Hussain, Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, V. K. Krishna
Menon in the year 1954.
• PADMA BHUSHAN It is the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India,
after the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan, but comes before the Padma
Shri. It is awarded by the Government of India. It is awarded to recognize
distinguished service of a high order to the nation, in any field.
• PADMA SHRI It is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India,
after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is
awarded by the Government of India. It is awarded to the citizens of India to
recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including
the Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Medicine, Social Service
and Public Affairs. However, it has also been awarded to some distinguished
individuals who were not citizens of India and who did contribute in various
ways to India.

Padma Shri Awardees from Odisha It was instituted in the
year 1954 by the Government of India. It is the fourth
highest civilian award in India. Many persons from Odisha
have been conferred by this award. Some awardees are
given below:Padma Shri was conferred on five personalities
from Odisha — Shanti Devi, Purnamasi Jani, Rajat Kumar
Kar, Krishna Mohan Pathi and Nanda Prusty in 2022.
Four eminent personalities from the State have been
shortlisted for the conferment of 2023 Padma Awards.
These distinguished persons who are going to receive the
Padma Shri award are Krishna Patel, a singer; Maguni
Charan Kuanr, a puppeteer; Antaryami Mishra, a
litterateur and Pattayat Sahu, a farmer.
Krishna Patel along with Jitendriya Haripal lent
her voice to Rangabati, an epoch-making
Sambalpuri folk song. This song is still popular
among music lovers in and outside the nation.
While Haripal and Mitrabhanu Gountia, who
penned the iconic song, were conferred Padma
Shri in 2017 and 2020 respectively, its singer
Krishna Patel will receive the prestigious award
this year. The sixty five-year-old Patel has
crooned over 500 songs.
‘Rangabati’, the famous Sambalpuri folk song
which has gained popularity across the country,
has won three Padma Shri awards in a span of
five years, a feat which is the first of its kind
in India.
Eighty five-year-old Maguni Charan Kuanr
of Keonjhar district will be felicitated
with the prestigious Padma Shri for
devoting his life to preserving a dying art
like puppet dance. He has as many as 45
subjects to perform using his puppets. He
has travelled across the State to stage
his show. He was happy after hearing the
good news.
Pattayat Sahu of Nandol village under
Junagarh block is a known figure in Kalahandi
district. He has grown over 2,500 medicinal
plants in his backyard. He has been creating
awareness among the people regarding the
benefits of medicinal plants. Because of such
exemplary work, he was also featured in Prime
Minister’s Mann Ki Baat programme.
Litterateur Pandit Antaryami Mishra of
Dhenkanal district is a columnist, astrologer
and researcher, all rolled into one. While
he has been contributing to the research in
Odia language, grammar and culture for the
last five decades, he has authored 37
books. Many of his literary works have
found places in textbooks.

•The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet
Monga, has won Best Documentary Short Subject at the 95th Academy Awards.
• The Elephant Whisperers is the first Indian film to win an Oscar in this category
and the third to be nominated after The House That Ananda Built and An Encounter
With Faces which competed for Best Documentary Short in 1969 and 1979
respectively.
• The Elephant Whisperers, set in the Mudumalai National Park, is the tale of an
orphaned elephant calf named Raghu in the care of Bomman and Belli, an
indigenous couple.
• The Elephant Whisperers was released on Netflix in December 2022.
Filmmaker SS Rajamouli's period action blockbuster "RRR" charted history

Grammy Award
• This award is given for outstanding achievements in the Music
Industry by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science
(NARAS) of the United States first awarded in 1959. This award is
given in 108 categories.
• In 2015, Ricky Kej and Neela Vaswani won this award for Best new
age album and best childrens’s album respectively.
• The 64th annual Grammy Awards are being held for the first time at the MGM
Grand Garden Arena with Trevor Noah as host. The 64th GRAMMY Awards
recognizes recordings (including musical artists, compositions and albums)
released between September 01, 2020, to September 30, 2021. Jon Batiste received
the most nominations with eleven and Batiste also received the most awards with
five.
• Indian-American singer Falguni Shah, who goes by the stage name Falu, has won
the Grammy Award this year for the Best Children's Music Album for A Colourful
World.
• Ricky and The Police drummer Stewart won the Best New Age Album for 'Divine
Tides'. It was a moment of pride for the country as Indian composer Ricky Kej won

Bharatiya Jnanpith Award
• The Jnanpith Award is an Indian literary award presented annually by the
Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust to an author for their outstanding contribution towards
literature.
• Instituted in 1961, the award is bestowed only on Indian writers who have been
writing in Indian languages, included in the 8TH Schedule to the Constitution of
India and in English.
• As of 2015, the cash prize has been revised to 11 lakh with a bronze replica of
Saraswati. G Shankara Kurup was the first recipient of the 1965
• Renowned Konkani novelist and short story writer Damodar Mauzo won the 57th
Jnanpith Award on November 7, along with Assamese poet Nilmani Phookan Jr,
who won the 56th Jnanpith Award.
Saraswati Samman Award
• The Saraswati Samman Award is an annual award for outstanding prose or
poetry literary works in any of the 22 Indian languages listed in Schedule Eight of
the Constitution of India.
• The award was instituted in 1991 by the KK Birla Foundation. It consists of 10
lakhs, a citation and a plaque. The first recipient of this award was Harivansh Rai
Bachchan.
➢ Tamil writer Sivasankari has been selected for Saraswati Samman for
2022 for her book Survya Vamsam.
➢ It is a book of memoirs in Tamil language and was published in 2019.
➢ Saraswati Samman instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation in 1991 is
recognized as the most prestigious and the highest literary award in the
country.
➢ It carries an award money of 15 lakh rupees, a Citation and a Plaque.
➢ Vyas Samman 2022: Pagalkhana, a 2018 satirical novel by renowned
Hindi author Dr. Gyan Chaturvedi, has been chosen for the 32nd Vyas
Samman. Dr. Chaturvedi’s Pagalkhana (mental hospital) was chosen for the
prestigious Vyas Samman by a selection committee led by distinguished
author Prof. Ramji Tiwari.
RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARDS
Instituted in 1957 and named after Ramon Magsaysay, the late President of the
Philippines, who died in an air crash. This award is given annually on August 31.

• It is an annual award for achievements in newspapers, magazines
and online Journalism, Literature and Musical Composition in the
United States instituted in 1917 and named after the US Publisher
Joseph Pulitzer. • It is administered by Columbia University in New
York City.

Photojournalists were awarded. They are: Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan
and Channi Anand

➢ Photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, who lost his life last year after a Taliban

India. Besides, Reuters journalists Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, and
Amit Dave were also felicitated with the prestigious award.

Man Booker Prize.
•It is the highest literary award to authors of
British, Irish and Commonwealth countries
instituted in 1968 by the Booker Company.
• It was renamed the Man Booker Prize, as the
sponsorship has been taken over by the Man
Group, an international stockbroker..
