ASSIGNMENT-10

Q-1 A steel column ISHB 250 @ 537 N/m supports a factored load of 1000 kN.
Design a base slab for the column to connect it on M20 concrete pedestal.
Draw the connection details

Solution fck= 20 N/mm

2

Factored Load Pu= 1000 KN

Size of Base plate:

2
Bearing strength of concrete= 9 N/mm

2
Area of base plate required = 111111.1 mm

SQRT of Area= 333.3333 mm

Select base plate size= 340X340 mm

2
Thickness of Base Plate = 8.650519 N/mm

Projection are= 45 mm

ts= 11.61392 mm

Thickness of flange of the column = 9.7 mm

Provide 12 mm thick plate

Connections:

Use 4 bolts of 20 mm diameter ,300mm long as anchor bolts.

weld= 1447.4 mm

2
Strength of weld = 189.3709 N/mm

Let s be the size of weld .then effective area of weld =[Link] Le effective length

The design condition is

0.7sLe*189.37= 1000*10^3

sLe= 7543..8
Using 6 mm weld ,Le required = 1257 mm

Effective length: 1303.4 mm > 1257

Hence , 6mm weld is adequate.

Q-2 Design a gusseted base to carry an axial factored load of 3000 kN. The
column ISHB 450 @ 855 N/m with two 250 x 22 mm cover plates on either
side. The effective height of the column is 5 m. The column is to rest on M20
concrete pedestal.

Solution ISHB 450 @ 855 N/m

Factored Load = 3000 KN

Cover plate = width= 250 mm depth= 22 mm

Height of column = 5m

2
fck= 20 N/mm

2
Area of base plate required= 333333.3 mm

Selecting ISA150115,15 mm angle and16 mm thick gusset plate

Minimum width required = 756 mm

Let width= 800 mm

Length of base plate= 416.6667 mm

Let length be 450 mm

Thus provide 800 X 450 mm plate

2
Intensity of pressure under base plate = 8.333333 N/mm

Assuming load transfer is at middle of (cover plate +gusset plate+vertical leg of angle),

M= -24583.3 N-mm

2
Bending Strength fy/gmo= 227.2727 N/mm

Equating moment of resistance to bending moment ,

1.2*Ze*fy/gmo= M

1.2*1/6*1*t2*227.27= 24583.33
t= 23.25596 mm

Use 25 mm thick plate.

The base plate selected is 800 X 450 X 25 mm

DESIGN LOAD= 1500 KN

Load on each splice= 750 KN

Using 20 mm shop bolts,

Strength of bolt in single shear= 45272.43 N

Bolt value 45272.43 N

No of bolts required= 16.56637

Provide 20 bolts connecting column to gusset plates.

Use another 8 bolts to connect clear angle to gusset plate.
6 anchor bolts of 20 mm diameter and 300 mm long on either side are used to fix column toconcrete base.
