Network Engineer Interview Questions and Sample

Answers

1. Tell us about your experience as a Network Engineer.

I have over five years of experience in network engineering, managing LAN and WAN
environments for medium to large organizations. My expertise includes deploying and maintaining
Cisco and Palo Alto solutions, configuring firewalls, optimizing network performance, and
troubleshooting connectivity and security issues.

2. What drew you to this role at Krones Group?

I’m excited by the opportunity to work in a global environment where I can contribute to a complex,
enterprise-level network. Krones’ focus on innovation and infrastructure optimization aligns with my
skills in Cisco, Palo Alto, and SD-WAN solutions.

3. What is the difference between TCP and UDP, and when would you use each?
TCP is connection-oriented and ensures data delivery — used for reliable applications like web
browsing. UDP is faster and connectionless — used for streaming or VoIP where speed matters
more than reliability.

4. Can you explain how you would troubleshoot a network outage affecting multiple users?
I’d start by identifying the scope and checking logs for alerts. Then verify connectivity across layers
— physical, data link, and network. Once the issue is found, such as a failed switch or
misconfiguration, I’d fix, test, and document it.

5. How do you secure a corporate network?

I apply layered security using firewalls (Palo Alto NGFW), VLAN segmentation, NAC (Cisco ISE),
intrusion prevention, and VPNs for remote access. Regular patching and monitoring are also key.

6. What is your experience with SD-WAN and SASE?

I’ve deployed SD-WAN for improved connectivity and traffic prioritization. I understand how SASE
combines SD-WAN with cloud-based security like CASB and Zero Trust Access for secure remote
connectivity.

7. How do you handle IP address management and DNS/DHCP configuration?

I use IPAM tools for IP tracking, configure DHCP scopes with redundancy, and manage DNS zones
and propagation monitoring.

8. How would you configure and maintain a Palo Alto firewall?

I configure policies, NAT rules, zones, and virtual routers, keep signatures updated, and monitor
logs regularly. I also use Panorama for centralized management.

9. Describe your experience with Cisco hardware and software.

I’ve configured routers and switches, implemented VLANs, routing protocols like OSPF and EIGRP,
and managed ACLs and Cisco DNA Center.
10. What monitoring or management tools have you used?
I’ve used SolarWinds, PRTG, Wireshark, and Cisco Prime for monitoring and diagnostics, allowing
early detection of network anomalies.

11. Describe a time you resolved a critical network issue under pressure.
When a WAN link failed between regional offices, I rerouted traffic via a VPN tunnel and
coordinated with the ISP. Connectivity was restored within an hour, and redundancy improvements
followed.

12. How do you manage and document network changes?

I follow ITIL processes: submit change requests, assess impact, and update the CMDB after
implementation.

13. How do you stay current with new network technologies?

I take online courses, follow vendor updates, and participate in professional tech communities and
webinars.

14. Describe your experience collaborating with global teams.

I’ve worked in cross-time-zone teams using Teams and Jira, keeping detailed documentation and
communication for seamless coordination.

15. How do you prioritize tasks when multiple incidents occur simultaneously?
I prioritize based on business impact and SLA — production issues come first. I communicate
timelines and use ITSM tools for tracking.

16. Which certifications have helped you most in your work?

My CCNA and PCNSA certifications have been key, along with ITIL 4, which helps structure IT
operations and service delivery.

17. Are you comfortable working flexible hours or on-call rotations?

Yes, I understand uptime is critical. I’ve worked on-call rotations before and can support 24/7
environments.

18. What do you consider the most important quality for a Network Engineer?
Proactive problem-solving and communication. Preventing issues before they occur and clearly
documenting solutions are vital.

19. How do you ensure network documentation remains up to date?

I update topology maps and configuration records after every change and review documentation
quarterly with the team.

20. What are your career goals in the next few years?
I aim to advance to a senior network engineer or architect role, specializing in SD-WAN, network
automation, and security.
