You are working as an apprentice engineer in a large civil
aircraft maintenance organisation working on Airbus A380
aircraft. You have been tasked by the Apprentice Training
Vocational Scenario or Manager to write a technically accurate report showing your
Context understanding of the airframe fuel and airframe ice
protection and fire protection systems and their components.
The Apprentice Training Manager is not an engineer.
Task 1 Using the relevant aircraft technical manuals, you are to
write a technically accurate report that evaluates the
function and operation of the airframe fuel, icing and fire-
protection systems. The report is to include:
An evaluation of the airframe fuel systems and
components assessing their contribution to safe flight.
The evaluation must include:
o An analysis of fuel types and additives and the
operation of the fuel system components and
fuel-tank layout during fuel-feed, fuel transfer,
jettison, refuelling and defueling modes.
An evaluation of the airframe de-icing, anti-icing and
fire-detection and extinguishing systems and their
components assessing their contribution to safe flight.
The evaluation must include:
o An analysis of the function and operation of ice
detection, pre-emptive anti-icing (electrical,
hot air, chemical) and reactive de-icing
(pneumatic, electromagnetic-impulse
chemical) systems and components including
applicable fluid types and the operation of the
warning system.
The function and operation of Fire, heat and smoke
detectors, flight-deck and cabin-fire warnings, fire
extinguishing systems and the nature of the extinguishing
agents relative to different classes of fire.

o You must include the operation of the manual
and automatic actuation of the extinguisher
bottles.
You will need to ensure that the report is easy to read, well-
structured and uses the correct technical terminology and
any applicable engineering mathematical notations.
