PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

LÝ THUYẾT
I. Khái niệm
Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn (Past continuous tense) dùng để diễn tả một hành
động, sự việc đang diễn ra xung quanh tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong
quá khứ.
Ví dụ: We were playing football at this time yesterday.
II. Cấu trúc thì quá khứ tiếp diễn
1. Thể khẳng định

Cấu trúc: S + was/were + V-

ing
Trong đó: S (subject): Chủ ngữ
V-ing: động từ thêm “-ing”
Lưu ý: Chủ ngữ là I/ He/ She/ It/Nit/rieng đi với “was”
Chủ ngữ là We/ You/ They/Nnhieu đi với “were”
Ví dụ:
- At three o’clock, I was hanging out with my friends. (Vào lúc 3 giờ, tôi
đang đi chơi với bạn của tôi.)
2. Thể phủ định

Cấu trúc: S + wasn’t/ weren’t + V-

ing
Lưu ý: was not = wasn’t
were not = weren’t
Ví dụ:
She wasn’t studying English yesterday afternoon.
3. Thể nghi vấn
Câu hỏi được chia làm 2 dạng: dạng Yes/No question và dạng câu hỏi
W/H.
a. Câu hỏi Yes/No question: là dạng câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng động từ tobe
“was” hoặc “were”

Cấu trúc: Was/ Were + S + V-

ing ?
Trả lời: Yes, S + was/ were.
No, S + wasn’t/ weren’t.
Ví dụ:
- Were they listening while he was talking? (Họ có nghe khi anh ấy nói
không?)
-> Yes, they were./ No, they weren’t.
b. Câu hỏi WH- question: là dạng câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng 1 trong các từ để
hỏi: What, Where, Who, When, How.

Cấu trúc: WH-word + was/ were + S + V-

ing?
Trả lời: S + was/ were + V-ing +…
Ví dụ:
- What were you doing in the meeting yesterday? (Bạn đã làm gì trong buổi
họp hôm qua?)
III. Cách sử dụng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn
1. Diễn tả một hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm trong quá
khứ.
- I was watching TV at 8 o’clock last night.. (Tôi đang xem TV vào lúc 8 giờ
tối qua.)
- c.(Vào lúc này năm ngoái họ đang sống ở Anh.)
2. Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra thì có hành động khác xen vào.
- He was walking in the park when it rained. (Anh ấy đang đi bộ trong công
viên khi trời mưa.)
- They were waiting for the bus when the accident happened. (Họ đang chờ
xe buýt khi tai nạn xảy ra.)
3. Diễn tả những hành động xảy ra đồng thời trong quá khứ.
- John was listening to music while his mother was cooking in the kitchen.
(John đang nghe nhạc khi mẹ anh ấy nấu ăn trong bếp.)
- Our team were eating dinner, discussing plans, and having a good time.
( Đội của chúng tôi đã đang ăn tối, thảo luận kế hoạch và có m ột kho ảng
thời gian vui vẻ.)
IV. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn trong tiếng Anh
- At + giờ + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at 5 o’clock yesterday,…)
- At this time + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at this time last year,…)
- At this time + in + năm (in 2022, in 2023) / in the past
-> khoảng thời gian cụ thể trong quá khứ
Ví dụ:
- At this time last week, we were playing soccer on the beach. (Vào lúc này
tuần trước, chúng tôi đang chơi bóng đá ở bãi biển.)
