Part B – Reading
You are going to read a text about reasons why you should study abroad in high school.
As you may know, there are lots of great university programmes for studying abroad, but there
are also many study abroad options available to students in high school. Whether you know you
will love it or just want to have a try, here are five reasons why you should consider studying
abroad in high school.
Reason #1: You’ll learn if you’re capable of taking care of yourself
For most people, going away to university is the first test of whether they can take care of
themselves. To help you find out how capable you are of taking care of yourself, studying abroad
in high school is a good option. You’ll learn valuable self-care skills while having fun. Studying
abroad is also a well-structured way to learn life lessons — as opposed to travelling, where you
might be out on your own without the support of programme organizers, teachers, and
classmates to help you succeed.
Reason #2: You’ll become more than just a tourist
Perhaps you’ve travelled a bit with your parents and enjoy going on holiday. Well, if you study
abroad in high school, you’ll learn what it’s like to travel beyond being a tourist. Going
to classes, learning a new language and fitting in with everyday life in a foreign place is far
different from being a tourist. And it’s even more exciting because you learn about a country
much more deeply than if you’re just taking a guided tour around it.
Reason #3: You can learn a new language
The ability to learn a new language is a great skill, and it can be extremely useful for all of us to
have. Learning a new language is a door that always opens to new worlds. It’s best to learn
languages while you’re still young and your mind is flexible, and learning through studying
abroad is a great way to improve language skills — or to learn new ones.
Reason #4: You’ll make new friends around the world
Who doesn’t want to make cool new friends? And there’s perhaps nothing cooler than having
friends in foreign countries. Friendships that you form in your younger years are usually deeper
and stronger. If you study abroad in high school, you’ll make good friends and they will be by
your side for life.
Reason #5: You’ll experience a different culture and new ways of life
As you know, travelling helps you understand the world better. But studying abroad while you’re
still young, in high school, exposes you to much more than just a few differences.
You’ll realize that, while life throughout the world is different, there are many similarities that
people share. There’s nothing like experiencing this for yourself.
