Chapter 1: Computer – A Smart Machine Pattern

PARENT INSTRUCTIONS – HOW TO APPROACH THIS CHAPTER

(For Homework Support: Pages 1 to 7)

Dear Parents,
This chapter introduces your child to machines, how they work, and why a computer is called a smart machine.
Please support your child in a gentle and fun way. Here is how you can guide them step-by-step:

1. Start with Real-Life Examples

Before opening the book, show your child some simple machines at home:
• Manual: broom, scissors, sharpener
• Electric: fan, mixer, TV
• Fuel-based: bike, car (from window/street) Explain in easy words:
“Machines help us do work faster and easier.”
This makes the chapter meaningful and connected to real life.

2. Read the Chapter Together (Pages 1–7) Spend 5–7 minutes daily reading one smal part:
What is a machine?
Types of machines
What makes a computer smart?
Types of computers
Read slowly and point to the pictures.
Let the child repeat important words (Machine, Computer, Desktop, Laptop, and Electricity).

3. Use Touch-and-Tell Learning

Children understand better when they touch real objects.
Show them:
• A fan to explain electric machines
• A scissor to explain manual machines
• A car toy to explain fuel machines
This helps the child remember the concepts naturally.

Tell your child:
“A computer is a machine that works on electricity and is very smart because it can do many things quickly.”
You may show the child:

child identify:
• Desktop (big computer on a table)
• Laptop (folding computer)

If you have any device at home, let the child see and name it.
6. Help Your Child with Activities
The assignment includes:
• Sorting natural/man-made machines
• Machine hunt
• Drawing and pasting work
• Simple writing tasks
• Creative poster work
Please support only with guidance.
Allow the child to do most of the colouring, pasting, and writing themselves.
7. Encourage safe habits around machines
Talk to your child about:
• Not touching switches
• Not playing near wires
• Keeping wet hands away from plugs
This helps reinforce computer and electricity safety.
8. Keep It Light, Fun, and Stress-Free
This chapter is designed to be enjoyable and practical.
