Reflected point coordinates change as follows: reflecting point P(a, b) in the Y-axis yields P'(-a, b). Therefore, if P'(-3, -9), then P(3, -9), and a + b = 3 - 9 = -6 .

Working calculations must be shown in exams because omitting essential workings will result in a loss of marks, ensuring that all steps leading to the final answer are clear and verifiable .

For a quadratic system to have equal roots and model a real-world scenario, ensure its discriminant is zero. This generally represents equilibrium states in structural integrity, as that characteristic implies potential redundancy or symmetry in the design, crucial for stable architectures .

For the equation (1 + m^2)x^2 + 2mcx + (c^2 - a^2) = 0 to have equal roots, the discriminant must be zero. This implies that (2mc)^2 = 4(1 + m^2)(c^2 - a^2), which simplifies to c^2 = a^2(1 + m^2).

A sphere has the largest surface area for a given volume compared to any other shape. Thus, statement II "A sphere has the largest surface area for the given volume" is true and statement I "A cylinder has the largest surface area for the given volume" is false .

To find the common difference (d) in an arithmetic progression where a18 - a14 = 32, identify the pattern where a_n = a + (n-1)d. The difference between the terms at positions 18 and 14 is (a + 17d) - (a + 13d) = 4d, which equals 32. Solving 4d = 32 gives d = 8 .

For the polynomial x^50 + 2x^49 + k to be divisible by (x + 1), use the remainder theorem. Substitute x = -1 into the polynomial expression to solve for k: (-1)^50 + 2(-1)^49 + k = 0, which simplifies to 1 - 2 + k = 0, giving k = 1 .

For two circles with radii 3 cm and 8 cm, and centers 13 cm apart, use the formula d^2 = L^2 + |r1^2 - r2^2| where d is the center distance and L is the tangent distance. Solve L = √(d^2 - (r1+r2)^2) = √(169 - 121) to find L = 8 cm .

Given the total deposit is Rs 15,600 and the interest is one-third of this amount, the interest earned is Rs 15,600 / 3 = Rs 5,200 .

To find the number of students who failed if the minimum passing grade is 40, plot the cumulative frequency distribution on an ogive curve and determine the cumulative frequency value for marks below 40. This frequency represents the number of students failing .
