CHINHOYI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
CATTLE ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION TRAINING
JUNE TRAINING
Venue: CUT -CHINHOYI
Course Description
This 5-day short course is designed to provide participants with both theoretical background and significant
opportunity for hands-on practice needed to be proficient in Cattle Artificial Insemination (AI) skills as a Do- it-Yourself
(D.I.Y) technology. With the use of AI technique, pregnancy rates comparable to those routinely achieved under
natural service in cattle are now achievable, but, AI affords the opportunity to access and use top rated, elite and
higher grade genetics than you can find in a live bull leading to rapid improvement of the quality of your cattle.
The course will unpack the four factors that brick wall the success of cattle AI which are (i) Heat detection efficiency;
(ii) Cow/heifer fertility; (iii) Semen fertility; and (iv) Inseminator efficiency (skill). This will be achieved through a series
of theory (classroom) lectures every day in the morning from Monday to Tuesday, hands-on practice sessions from
Tuesday afternoon to Thursday. The training ends with hands on Practical Examinations on Friday morning.
Lecture topics will include anatomy & physiology of the female reproductive tract, setting cattle breeding objectives,
livestock breeding equation, oestrus cycle, heat detection, estrous & ovulation synchronization, feeding the cow for
successful Ai, herd health practices to maximise conception rates to AI, and managing your breeding cows before,
during, and after AI o maximise calving rates.
The practical's will cover desktop touch and feel of the anatomy of the female reproductive tract, handling and
familiarization with AI breeding equipment, cattle AI techniques, semen handling, loading the AI gun, inseminating the
cow, care and maintenance of liquid nitrogen tanks, hygiene before, during and after insemination, pregnancy
diagnosis by rectal palpation, and breeding record keeping.
Objective of the course
To equip participants with knowledge and skills of running successful AI programmes as a D.I.Y
Technology for better quality cattle breeds, improved calving rates and increase herd size.
Who should attend?
• Veterinary, Agriculture, Animal Science or Animal Health Certificate, Diploma and/ or Degree holders
• Livestock Extension and Field Officers, and Farm Managers
• Community Animal Health Workers and Farmers
**Non-veterinary professionals are restricted to perform AI on their own farm animals only **
Course Fees: USD$ 125 (excluding accommodation and meals: A meal at CUT cost USD 1!!).
Certificates of competence will be issued to successful participants.
