CBI Sub-Inspector Training Guide
CBI Sub-Inspector Training Guide
HOME
Congratulations!! If you are reading this web page, I assume either you are just selected
for the post of SI (Sub-Inspector) in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or passionate
for a job in this premier investigation agency. I have updated this blog on 04-Jan-
2023 and you can read other articles of this blog here.
CBI is also called Delhi Special Police Establishment. From name, it is very clear that CBI
is a police force but not that police that generally comes in everyone's mind with a police
station, khakhi uniform, guns, lathi, beacon jeeps/cars etc. In this sense, CBI is just a
police but not true police.
I have planned to share all the open information about Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) and its training in Questions and Answer mode which would appeal to most of the
aspirants. After all, all the CBI investigations are about having some questionnaire ready
and knowing the answers (proofs/evidences) for them.
The way fetus struggles inside the womb for 9 months and come out of it as a beautiful
and cute baby, CBI cadet also struggles almost for 9 months to become a full fledged
Sub Inspector. Read on how you enter CBI academy as a raw gold and come out of it as
a glittering jewelry with which everyone wants to have a relationship.
Q10) Who am i?
I am T. Ajay, Inspector in CBI, selected through SSC CGL 2015. I worked earlier in reputed
Software companies for many years in various countries and later decided to change my
profession. I am of strong opinion that satisfaction in life is more important than
anything else. Hence i decided to choose this career of more satisfaction, learning and
challenges.
Q20) What motivated me to write a blog?
I feel giving SSC is more challenging. It takes your rest away at least for two years in
total and no result can be called final result as one or the other complaints continue to
haunt and halt the process. In this sense, SSC exams are more difficult than Civils. There
is no certainty of completion of exam process (Ex: CGL 2013, CGL 2017) in due time.
Even after the final results are declared, you can’t be happy and quiet.
I feel all this is an avoidable suffering and I don’t want any other aspirant to be in
dilemma even after the final results are out and waiting for the appointment letter
indefinitely. This keeps all the selected candidates in disquiet and jobless as they don’t
risk to join any other job as offer letter from CBI can come at any time. My attempt here
is to give clarity on the process after the final results are declared and more focus on CBI
training so that you can plan accordingly to keep yourself productive.
I happened to be one of the aspirants for the post of SI in CBI and i didn't have any idea
about the training in CBI and the only resources i had were some YouTube videos and
few other websites to know about CBI. Actually, those videos and websites content is
not prepared by those that are part of CBI family. So, there is a gap between the actuality
and what is shared by them on internet. What you read on internet at other sources is
only an hearsay. There is no one-stop video or website which can give me FULL details
on SSC CGL CBI SI post. Though there are few sources, they are either outdated or non-
interactive.
can give all the information from the time your SSC CGL final results are declared
till you pass-out as Sub-Inspector after a passing out parade (PoP) in CBI Training
Academy. PoP generally happens on Saturday as CBI Director is expected to be
free on that day.
is regularly updated.
is interactive so that aspirants can clarify the doubts from the blogger itself (of
course, not the questions that were already answered very clearly in this blog).
can guide for their post selection while setting their job priority.
Until you take oath in front of the national flag as above, you are called Cadet/Recruitee.
I think the information i shared here is so exhaustive that one might feel tired reading
this blog and you might complete with short breaks. Sharing such information will not
only give idea to the true aspirants of job in CBI but also to all other who wants to set
job/post priority as per their suitability depending upon the information shared in this
blog. How many ever articles you read about CGL posts, i am sure you will be unsatisfied
until you get into the service that you always wanted.
I have taken due care in writing each word in every article after verifying the facts and
not based on opinions. Whole blog is written by me. You may confidently read the
information without any apprehensions. Wherever needed, hyperlinks are provided in this
blog. You can identify such links as they would be in blue colour. You would feel more
connected to this article if you are trained at least for a month in CBI academy.
You can just get the full names of the selected candidates from the results pdf, search
those names in Facebook, ping them in messenger, get the phone numbers and make a
Whatsapp group for future communication. I am sure most of the selected candidates
end up changing their profile pic of whatsapp and Facebook to CBI logo which they
revert back slowly in due course of time 😀. For me, the sound of CBI was special until i
joined the department. Later, it became a common word to my ear.
Start watching Crime Patrol, CID (Hindi, Telugu), Real Detectives (ETV Telugu) and
other crime related serials. May be you can also watch movies: Special 26 (Hindi),
Rahasya (Hindi), Athadu (Telugu), Nyayam Kosam (Telugu, Rajasekhar's), Few
Malayalam CBI movies. Pls share if you know more other detective related
movies/serials/series. It is for both entertainment and to tune your brain.
Start following [Link] webpage
for latest updates on various
cases.
Once you become a CBI officer, you will have to work with computer and prepare
various documents. If you are not familiar with typing, you can start practicing
typing. Typing is must for CBI job. Better utilize your time to learn typing until you
get your appointment letter. Be familiarized with MS Word and Excel. Training to
teach you typing in CBI academy may not be to the level of your satisfaction. There
are many free softwares available over internet that can help you practice typing.
If you are more enthusiastic, you can also learn IPC and CrPC from YouTube or
from any other sources. Indian Penal Code (IPC) tells you what is considered as
crime and the punishment for committing such crime. Criminal Procedure Code
(CrPC) tells you the working of police and courts i.e. how an offender is brought to
book, FIR, crime is to be investigated, arrest, police report, trial procedure, bail,
conviction, hierarchy of non-constitutional courts, public prosecutors etc.
Q40) What is the general process after SSC CGL final results are out?
Read here.
Q90) Can i ask for joining date extension, after the appointment letter is issued?
If you have done technical resignation from any other central government department of
any cadre, they allow you. If not, unless you have prior intimation and approval from CBI
HQ, you can't take extension. Approval for such requests depends on their will and the
concern they feel. You may send a request letter for joining extension to Deputy Director
(Personnel), only after you received your joining letter but not before as your posting in
CBI is considered tentative until then. However, if you are more worried, nothing stops
you writing and sending such request letter for which they might respond back with a
unsatisfactory answer. It would be logical to think how can one give joining extension to
those whose documents are still under scrutiny and the confirmed joining letter is not yet
issued.
Yes. You are required to execute a bond for Rs 10,000/- which i believe is very minimal
when compared to the physical training and salary they are paying. Department
communicates to you properly on how to prepare such bond while reporting to CBI for
joining. The bond is not invoked if you join some other central govt job by leaving CBI.
This bond is invoked if you leave the job before completing your probation for any other
reason.
It is in Ghaziabad CBI Academy. CBI Sub Inspector training period is for 32-33 weeks
only. Ignore all other internet articles where they say that the training period is more.
Phase-1 of 22 weeks and Phase-2 of 10 weeks. There would be nominal and simple
objective type exams for every one month. These are meant to recall your class room
training happened for that month.
Entire training syllabus can be found here. There will be a true final exam on each subject
at the end of each phase. May be you can start reading them, if interested but not
necessary. Already having knowledge on any subject is always welcomed. No harm in
learning things in advance when you are free.
Phase-I is meant only for classroom training and Phase-II has advanced classes and
field training of what we learnt in Phase-I. There will be a holiday break after the phase-1.
Number of days of this break is decided by the Joint Director, not necessarily one week.
Personal vehicles (Bikes, Cars, Cycles) are not allowed while you are in training as they
need separate stickers to allow them inside the campus. Security will remove the air
from the tyres of your vehicle if they find any unauthorized vehicles in the campus and it
happens indeed. It all depends on mood of officials of the academy. So, don't be in hurry
to buy a vehicle as you are just selected for CBI. Better to wait until your training is over.
Phase-I:
Phase-II:
CBI HQ (Head Quarters), CBI Branch and Court Attachment all together for two
weeks. These CBI branches are Delhi-ACB, Delhi-SC, Delhi-EO, Delhi-BSFC and
Ghaziabad-ACB only. No Physical training during this attachment. For people from
south and posted to HQ, they can go to Andhra Bhavan which is 5 Kms away from
HQ. Food is very good here and they would feel that they have tasty food after very
long. You get all food varieties here. Heavy Rush here as even north Indians take
food here. When we were getting trained in the year 2017, full meals was Rs 120/-
and it has become Rs 170/- as on 01.01.2022
Six weeks class-room training on advanced topics with regular physical training in
the morning.
Indian Customs Act
The Antiquities and Art Treasures Act
Wildlife Protection Act
Indian Contract Act
Anti Human Trafficking
Custodial Deaths
Encounters
RBI Monitoring over Banks, Bank Frauds
Insurance Frauds
Investigation Abroad
CFSL (Very near to CBI HQ) and AIIMS Trauma center attachment, each one day,
for two days in total. Academy takes you in the bus in the morning and brings you
back in the evening. In AIIMS, you will be shown real postmortem of dead body
(male/female) which some people might feel disgusting. CFSL visit is very tiring.
From CFSL, we have to go to CBI HQ for food. After corona, canteen in CBI HQ is
discontinued. In AIIMS canteen, you get very good quality and tasty food for cheap
price and even the doctors working there takes the same. No Physical training
during this attachment.
Arms / Weapons training at external spot (BSF, CISF, CRPF camps etc.) for 3-4
days. We were trained at CRPF Academy Kadarpur Gurgoan by their professionals.
If accommodation is available in CRPF academy, the experience would be great.
Otherwise, you will have to travel three hours in the morning and again in the
evening in traffic which is very very tiring. You will have to start at 6:30 AM from the
CBI academy and reach back by 8:30 PM. Since you fire weapons / guns for the
first time in life, you would enjoy this training fully. First/Second day it will be theory
and third day it will be totally practical. You would fire approximately 40-50 bullets
using browning pistol and glock pistol. You would realize that handling and firing a
gun is not that easy as shown in movies. It gives sound as much as a firecracker.
You would also get a chance to see various other original defense weapons, their
working style and specifications.
Rural and Urban Police Station Attachment, each one week, for two weeks in total.
Unlike previous attachments, Physical training continues in the morning during this
attachment period as nearby police stations are selected. So, this attachment is
not to any police station of your choice. Nearly 20-30 people will be sent to one
police station. You will get a chance to do patrolling, arresting, interrogation and all
the activities performed by them. It is also boring and tiring as state police pay less
or no attention to you due to lack of time and for being busy with their regular work.
ACB: Anti Corruption Branch. 80% or more cases of CBI are of ACB.
SC : Special Crime (All your CID and Crime Patrol serials are about this)
EOW: Economic Offenses Wing (Share Market Trading Offenses, MLM)
BSFC: Banking Security and Fraud Cell. (Loan Frauds, Forgery and Cheating)
Note: CBI-ACB is different from State ACB. CBI-ACB deals with corruption of central
government employees while State employees' corruption is dealt by the State-ACB. This
was a administrative arrangement made to avoid duplication of cases and work. As per
theory, in emergency, either can work on the other as well which subsequently has to be
handed over to the concerned. In practice, this actually doesn't work as everyone is
already overloaded with their own work.
You can find many prepaid taxi counter after you come out of the Delhi airport. However,
I advise you not to utilize their services as I observed them to be not tidier and no proper
AC. Not worth for the price we pay. My driver was smoking even while driving. Also,
those drivers are not familiar with the route to CBI Academy. Best is to utilize Ola/Uber
services with GPS on.
A hostel in-charge is available round the clock every day. You can approach him on the
day of your reporting. Gateman can guide you to the hostel when you arrive and he shall
even make a intercom call to the in-charge for your quick support, if you arrive late in the
night. You can even report one day prior to your day of reporting and this facility is
especially useful for people coming from south.
Note: If you are required to travel back with big bags from Academy to the Airport for any
reason (suppose on the last day of your stay in academy), start at least three hours
before your flight departure time. Few of our friends missed their flights due to lack of
this information and lost tickets money. Traffic between these two points is like that.
Can't help with it. If you have no big bags, you can utilize the services of direct metro to
Airport.
No. You can’t stay with a person from same state and they allot the rooms after such
perusal. This is part of academy's planning to train you to be able to work anywhere in
the country and with any team member. This setup would also make you learn different
culture, language and respect each other's. After few initial weeks, may be you can try
changing your rooms on mutual agreement.
No. Who should go to what branch is all decided randomly by the CBI Academy course
coordinator and corrections/alternations in the list they prepare are not entertained by
them. However, nothing stops you from requesting them which they ignore finally. Your
leaves, if any, during the attachment phase are decided by that branch SP. No Physical
training during branch attachment phase. You can look for accommodation near HQ on
your personal expenses or travel to and fro from academy daily. Because you are in CBI,
you can look for any government guest house of any dept nearby, if available. We
personally commuted daily between Academy and HQ as that is much cheaper and to
avoid all other worries. As more cadets commute in this style, people book cabs and
share the expenses.
Q114) How do we go from Academy for branch training after Phase-1 is completed?
In CBI HQ, we have a branch in each floor. ACB, SCB-1, ACU-1, EOW-1 etc. Hence, most of
the cadets are tagged to HQ. From CBI Academy, you can go HQ through Metro or Ola.
No travel is provided by CBI except for the drop on the very first day and pick up on the
last day.
Metro: CBI Academy --> "Vaishali" Station (Blue Line) --> "Mandi House" Station -->
"Jangpura" Station.
From Jangpura, it is just walk-able distance to HQ. You can commute back to Academy
in same style. No need to worry about missing the metro train. Metro trains are available
for every 2-3 mins for any given route. Buy Metro card at the counter to save time and
get 10% discount on every travel. Those who are attached to Ghaziabad branch, they are
the luckiest persons as it is very near to CBI academy and don't have to worry about their
accommodation and food.
Update in July-2022: In the year 2017, Vaishali was the nearest metro station. But, as on
July-2022, Shaheed Sthal (= New Bus Adda) (Red Line) is the nearest metro station from
the Academy which is only 6 KM away.
In the Google maps link shared above and in terrain mode, you can observe the major
facilities in the academy like two basketball courts and one tennis courts with
floodlights, two indoor badminton courts with AC, indoor squash court, swimming pool,
synthetic race track built with 5 crore (Just 15 such tracks in entire India), two full
grounds for cricket/football, volley ball court, central police canteen, well equipped
modern Gym, Axis Bank ATM, Free Wifi to be used with your personal id, availability of
hot water in bath rooms, RO treated drinking water everywhere, LED TVs in the mess and
Durga maata temple for prayer. Axis Bank ATM is located near the staff quarters and it is
outside the compound of the academy. The compound gate to reach it is opened only
during certain hours i.e. 7AM to 9AM and 5 PM to 7PM. If you miss those hours, you will
have to roam around the campus for about 1 KM and reach it. Next nearest ATM is
located in Shastri Nagar, opposite to the academy. We have 24*7 water and electricity
facility with Window ACs in each trainee room. If SI rank cadets are given the facility of
AC during their training in the entire country, as on the year 2017, they are only CBI SI
cadets. Entire campus is fumigated with anti-mosquito repellents as per the need.
Plumber and electricians are available in the campus during office hours and you can
inform the hostel reception for any problems and they will be directed to take action
immediately.
Regarding studies, you have a library which is opened only during working hours and
highly sophisticated computer lab. You can barrow books from the library for few days.
There is a barber and a washer-man inside the campus. There are no washing machines
in your room. So, you will have to either wash yourself or get it washed. They are paid
services. Haircut (Only Military style) is Rs 30 and washing a pair of clothes is Rs 18.
Having haircut once in every two weeks is mandatory. Otherwise, be prepared for front
roll in the morning fall-in.
No water and electricity charges need to be paid by the trainees. After all it is our
academy.
Two beds with pillows and bed sheets, two tables, two chairs, one window ac, two
lockable cupboards and two shoe stands in the room. So, two persons can stay
comfortably in a room. Bathroom is of western style. As sink is also placed inside the
bathroom, only one can use the bathroom at a time. Rooms are cleaned every day and
bathrooms are cleaned once in a week or two.
This canteen caters to the general needs of the cadets and it is within the compound of
the academy, near to the staff quarters. It operate only for certain hours in the morning
and in the evening. Goods are available at 30-35% discount on MRP. You can buy
deodorants, soaps, washing soaps/powder, biscuits, mosquito coils and other basic
FMCG. No dry fruits. When you go to CBI HQ, there is a very big central police canteen
(CPC) 5 mins away from HQ at walk-able distance which is meant for CRPF near JLN
Stadium and we are also allowed with CBI Id card. Try that. Such CPCs are available
throughout India for our facility.
The food is majorly of north Indian with rice and daal every time. Breakfasts are also
mostly of north Indian style. You rarely get south Indian, may be once in a month like idly.
Chicken is served thrice a week on alternate days with no extra charge, other than
regular vegetable curry. So, menu plan keeps both vegetarians and non-vegetarians
happy. You can also order for extra diet like Banana (Rs 5 each), Eggs (Rs 5 each), Boiled
milk (Rs 20 per glass) and Raw milk packets of 500 ml (If you have electric kettle, then
this option is economical). While we were getting trained in the year 2017, Breakfast is
Rs 30, Lunch/Dinner is Rs 50. If you are going out on out-pass or leave, you can inform
the mess in-charge to stop cooking for you and he can deduct the mess bill accordingly
at the end of the month. If you fail to inform in right time, he mayn't help.
When you join, they take food advance of Rs 3000 and at the end of every month, you are
served with your food bill. You pay this bill to your platoon senior who in turn gives it
back to the course senior. Rs 3000 will be returned when you pass out of the academy.
Note: After having food, you can't leave the plate on your table. You have to keep the
used plate at the designated table. If you fail, they can give you group punishment and it
happened with us. No other CGL post has got this facility 😆.
Q160) What is the salary of SI in CBI after 7 CPC? What is the gross salary of SI in CBI?
You are given full salary every month even during training period. Separate article is
made for salary related. Pls read more here.
Separate article is made out for salary and related components. Pls read here.
All the weekdays including Saturday are working days in CBI Academy. Only Sunday is
the free day on which you are totally free. You still have Roll call on Sunday and outing
only for restricted hours, only if they consider that the batch is disciplined.
Classes can be there even on Restricted Holidays (RH). Declaring RH as true holiday
depends upon SP (Training). During RH/GH, we are mostly given holiday.
Q190) Timetable in CBI (or) What is the life of a CBI officer (S.I) in academy?

Only in your free time, you can do any activity of your choice. When you are with trainers
(ground or classroom), you have to go as per their orders. Self discretion (मर्जी) strictly
doesn't work, even if you want to do something
better/useful/productive/logical/reasonable.
No news papers are allowed in the classrooms. No book reading, while a lecture is going
on in the classroom. Some staff ask questions to such readers and some ignore. No
mobile phones are allowed at any instant of your outdoor/indoor training or roll-call
except in your Room. In fact, strong signal of any mobile network is not available as it is
a closed classroom. Also, in the hostel, mobile signal is very good at the open ground
side and other side it is frustratingly bad. So, keeping all these external factors under
consideration, please plan for your civil services preparation accordingly. There is no bar
on usage of mobile phones after your training for the day is over.
Indoor classes' timetable is shared on weekly basis, as they update it as per the staff
availability for next week.
They check all the cadets, platoon wise, on the below items
Proper shaving – It needs to be done on the same day morning only, not in the
previous night. Trainers do check by rubbing their hand against your cheeks. They
are expert in catching the people and give punishments. Don't ask me what if i
don't know how to shave. I expect you to show some maturity by not asking such
questions.
Proper Nails
Clean Shoes
Clean Uniform
Clean Chest Number
Proper Hair Cutting
Q201) I love by beard so much? Can i grow my beard after the training is over?
If it is customary to have a beard by religion (Ex: Sikh religion) or for some other
acceptable reasons, generally no one questions you. If not, you need to take permission
from your HOB for growing your beard for any reason. If he approves, it is fine. If not, you
may have to obey his orders.
Each weak (From Monday morning till Sunday evening roll-call) two people, in their chest
number sequence, become seniors of the batch. One for indoor activities and the other
for outdoor activities.
From the concept of senior, it is very clear that an individual can't directly approach any
desk staff. Anything needs to be done through the senior and he needs to be informed
about any activity. The main purpose of this is to inculcate leadership qualities in you.
Don't think that it is just a supporting role for the convenience of higher authority. It is a
recognized and authentic role in all police/military/para-military forces. The Senior can
be held responsible for anything wrong.
Entire batch is divided into groups and each such group is called a platoon. Platoon is of
size 20+ members. One from each platoon becomes a leader of the platoon for a week.
This happens in the sequence of chest number in the platoon until your training is over.
Platoon leader gives the attendance report to the outdoor senior at every assembly of
the batch. Existence of the platoon leader comes only during outdoor activities. He
should also make sure that one from the team, chest number wise, brings drinking water
can to the ground for their platoon.
Also, each platoon is responsible for taking out and arranging the articles in the ground
in the morning for the PT. One platoon per one week and this goes on rotation. So, they
need to go little early to the ground whenever it is their turn.
Majorly you are trained by the working CBI staff ranging from Constable to SP through
PPTs that are projected on screen. So, Pls don't expect academic level of teaching as
they are not academic trainers. They would mostly share their working experience by
correlating the subject. Apart from this, you will have guest lectures by retired officers of
various capacity and forensic science laboratory staff like document expert, finger print
expert, arms expert etc.
You need to wear the uniform of white shirt, cement colour pant, black belt, black shoe
and black socks. You ALL may consider buying "Red Tape" lace style shoes for
uniformity while coming for training so that you don’t have to buy another pair of shoes.
The outdoor trainers do check your socks by asking you to pull your pants up, before
they send you to the class rooms. Any other colour belt is not allowed. Shoes should be
polished.
Lectures in the class rooms are delivered mostly in Hindi. Usage of Hindi is almost 80%.
Hindi usage is 100% for outdoor training. This is a big letdown for South Indians. They
fight for usage of English in the classroom and eventually they quit from such demand
as trainers use Hindi because of their habit. Also South Indians get a counter question
from the staff members "What will you do when you are posted in North India". What
supposed to be a training of technical subjects will turnout to be a training of arts
subject (= language) for them. Cadets will have to keep reminding the staff to use little
bit English at least. Usage of Hindi seems comfortable for Hindi speaking people. But
the reality is that all the exams, job related documents and even the actual court work is
in English. So, this seeming advantage can be a problem for them after the training.
For the very first week of your joining, you can wear clothes and sport shoes of your
choice until uniform is arranged by the CBI. For morning PT, you need to wear white t-
shirt, short, chest number, white shoe and white socks. They are arranged by CBI and you
will have to pay for the same later. All those
CBI Sub Inspectors' training … should not only be in one colour but the
cloth should also be same. So, we can't
wear white short of any cloth thinking that
it is just sufficient to be in white colour.
Extra round of running in PT when you feel you are already tired.
Front Roll.
Extra Pushups.
Frog Jumps
Side Rolls.
Extra Drill.
No out-pass will be given.
One Round of Running in the sunlight in the afternoon when you just have your
lunch. Imagine how difficult it is 😢
Trainers makes your clothes dirty intentionally by asking you to roll where the
ground is wet due to night humidity/rain so that you need to wash it. It is indirect
punishment.
You will be asked to go for a round of running, if the indoor class is noisy.
No man handling or censure.
Group punishments are common when some unidentified person does any activity which
is supposed to be not done. One would feel the punishment as punishment only for the
first month. Thereafter, it becomes fun activity for all and at the end of entire training one
will realize that there is hardly a person left in the batch who hadn't taken punishment in
any form.
They take you to a recreation hall or class room which can accommodate almost 100.
They ask you to sit until the time is over. If they want they can ask you to do some yoga
even.
Remember, there are instances where we are asked to be in ground even when there is a
severe rain and were asked to do running and play football thereafter. It depends on their
will.
They are mostly of constable rank and promoted ASI/SI. They have very good stamina
levels. Though you are an SI cadet, they can command you as they are given the power
to train you even by giving punishment of any nature that they feel like giving. In fact, this
is the case even with IPS in NPA. Some outdoor trainers are brought from BSF, CRPF, SSB
etc. on deputation. As they are constables, they can only speak Hindi and they handle
records of office during regular office hours and you see them coming even to the
classrooms for maintaining discipline.
Before you read the list of events in the ground, first you should know that the trainers try
to improve your stamina levels from the day one and it is on you to cooperate with them.
It is as per your maximum capacity you do in the ground and your threshold limits are
not decided by the trainers though they try to bug you. Suppose if you can't run as fast as
others, it is still fine if you can keep running, either slowly or fast. Even the trainers don't
expect the everyone to be hares and they are happy even if you are tortoise but with
persistence. So, don't get disappointed even if you can't run fast due to any
psychological/physical/biological problem.
In the initial days of your training, some feel that they are doing something useless. Later,
they change their mind as their body starts taking a shape and they will automatically
participate in the activities as their body cooperates and there would be a sense of
competition among the batch mates in each event.
One month before the PoP (Passing out Parade) i.e. in Phase 2, there will be an outdoor
activities test for all the activities mentioned above. Unlike IPS physical training test, this
test is not your CBI career decider. This test just decides one outdoor best. They even
consider your outfit cleanliness while giving the marks. So, don't create or have
unnecessary apprehensions about this test.
After outdoor tests are over, daily PT continues and they will give you training for PoP for
a week or two as it is a CBI Director presence event. This practice is also very frustrating
as one would start feeling the monotony after few practices.
No need. If you are already familiar with the above stated activities, it is always good. If
you come prepared, it is most welcomed. If not, for first 10 days you will have body pains
and some people walk like robots. After few days, all is set and your body will be ready
even for 10K+ cross country run. No need to worry even if you don't know swimming.
Trainers are available for every group activity you do in academy.
It is better to have so that you don't have to run after a bank for opening a new account
there. Any bank (private/public) is fine. You can give that bank account for salary credit.
It is also must to have PAN card. If you don't have it, keep it ready by then.
SI of NIA and NCRB, CBI Stenographers (Stenos), Bangladeshi, Maldive officers are also
trained separately in CBI Academy. Outdoor training for NIA Sub Inspectors will be same
as that of CBI Sub Inspectors which is already detailed above. CBI SIs that are promoted
through limited departmental competition from LDC/UDC cadre are also clubbed with
CGL CBI SIs. Outdoor training schedule and activities are same for SIs of NIA and NCRB,
CBI Stenographers. Whenever any new batch comes to academy that have outdoor
training, they tighten CBI batch outdoor training to show case them the difficulty of CBI
training.
Note: For CBI Stenos, the training is just for three months. Their daily outdoor training
schedule is same as that of CBI Sub Inspectors which is already detailed above.
Few other state polices and high cadre officers are also given training in CBI and few
such training don't even come to our notice.
Q291) Any suggestions for girls that are getting trained in CBI Academy?
They are treated equal as all other in all respects. No special suggestions for them.
Thing is that only a few girls opt for CBI for the reasons as this job involves field work
and they can't leave their kid. Baby needs mother more than his father. In few batches,
there are no girls. Separate rooms are given for them in one wing of the same hostel and
swimming will be separate for them. There is no gender discrimination and after all CBI
premises are of a professional environment.
Q292) I am a married woman and i have a kid. Do they allow the kid to stay with me?
Yes. They do. In fact this was a concern faced by one of the candidate. You better write a
mail to the Head quarters stating your concern, well before you are given the
appointment letter, and they would ideally respond back with a positive note in 10-14
days of time. As you need to go out to the ground and class rooms, they also allow one
more person (mother or mother-in-law) to stay with your kid during your entire training
period. It is a special case and hence they generally consider your concern.
As part of surprise checks, Outdoor trainers come to your rooms to check how tidy your
rooms are. They can even give you punishments, if found not proper.
They even come during indoor classes to take head count to match with the attendance
record details. This is considerably frequent.
Also, on any holiday, you can have a sudden roll call at any time. All have to fall in and
whoever fails to report, they will be given punishments. Generally, who go out without
proper permission, comes under this list. In fact who don't attend roll call or goes out of
the campus after the roll call, they will be served with Memos as a disciplinary measure
and it all depends on course coordinator's opinion about overall discipline of the entire
batch. If they want, nothing stops them.
Q310) Is alcohol allowed? How about getting the outside food delivered?
Alcohol is strictly prohibited. If you are caught so either in roll call or PT, as indoor staff
once warned, they will do medical test to that person and get an FIR registered. Generally
they may not go to that extent. However, taking risk is a personal choice and i never took.
If you consume, it is against the written order of DIG. Smoking is also not allowed in
open areas. For the benefit of your health, outside fast food (Pizzas, Biryanis etc.) is also
not allowed and the staff explicitly insist on this. So, no Zomato or Swiggy or Uber Eats.
But some people do order food by disobeying and get caught subsequently. Cameras are
installed everywhere in the campus and even Gateman acts as informer. Training staff
do monitor the cameras carefully. Also, they select spys among your batch-mates for
getting confidential information. This works for them as all are not like minded in the
batch. Surprise checks indeed happen and the action they take depends on their mood.
Generally they stop all your outpass on weekends, rest on holidays like (diwali, dussera)
and extra PT etc.
CBI staff stays in the quarters available in the campus and very nearby areas. Like you,
they also go out for regular shopping and hence they easily recognize you if you are
going to any liquor shop. Even if they don't know you they recognize you by your military
hairstyle.
Every day four members, chest number wise, needs to perform night duty in the campus.
First two needs to do their duty from 10 PM-1 AM and second two from 1 AM – 4 AM.
Second two are exempted from attending PT in the morning.
Night duty is just wandering in the entire campus with a lathi and a whistle. It is nothing
but Gurkhawala job for that night. Some people take the risk of not doing it and they
sleep in the room but claims exemption from PT in the morning as if they have done it.
CBI goes for raids even in the mid night and we may have to wait for many hours until
the commission of the offence of taking bribe. Also, being a police, we should be
available for services 24*7 though it is not actually needed in CBI. Such raids are rare.
Pls remember that according to Article 33 of Indian constitution, police fundamental
rights are restricted.
It depends on your SP. You may request him to provide it as it is very much needed
applying for CGHS card. They may consider issuing it with temporary validity period.
CGHS card is a very useful card for your medical checkups. While applying for this during
your training in academy, giving parent details is not accepted as they are not staying
with you in the academy and you need to apply for your parents again after you are
posted to your branch after training. For CGHS, all those persons should stay together
and they can get the treatment done from that city only. So, when you are transferred, we
need to change the city details accordingly. This rule is actually bad from the employee
perspective. Exceptions are there for critical cases. Pls check the internet for more
information about CGHS, if interested. Trainees frequently claim some
pain/fever/fracture due to high physical activity and games. Hence it is needed to save
money.
Q340) Can I take leaves during training?
It depends upon the genuineness of your reason and satisfaction of the course
coordinator. If he is pleased, he shall approve it with well-defined date and time to be
reported back in academy. If not complied, you will be served with a memo. In extreme
cases, there can even be service break which will have impact throughout your career
and it indeed happened to one of our seniors. Staff strongly recommend you to plan your
marriage after the training. If marriage is inevitable, they may give you just 3 days. Not
more than that.
Note: Cadets who are appearing for Civils or SSC or any other PSC exams have to give
intimation in advance and they allow you. Just a formality. You are not the only one
appearing for those exams and you will have many friends doing this and they do this
intimation in group. Senior of your batch of that time handles this. So, no worries.
Q341) Can I take leave or rest from PT by acting some body injury ?
Read here.
You need to inform your outdoor trainer about their arrival. They normally say 'ok'. Your
guests, including wife/husband, can have lunch with you in the cafeteria and can even
stay for limited time in your room with your roommate permission. If the authority don’t
allow you, you can only meet them at the reception lounge.
Pls remember that your family is not allowed to stay inside the academy during your
entire training. In both the phases, you have to stay ONLY in academy. Even localities
(Ghaziabad residents) are not allowed to commute from their house daily to academy.
If it is a holiday, you can do so. I don't think there will be a problem. If not, your
fiance/friend/partner hardly gets time to meet you and this you can understand by
looking at the training schedule given at Q190 in this article. However, you can request
the academy outdoor in-charge/trainer and it is their discretion to accept your request or
not. So, you can try accordingly and don't feel bad if they don't.
Best job for the people who have the passion from the childhood to become a
police officer. Unlike in state police, in CBI you work only during office hours and
working days. Though you are a police officer, your life is balanced. Not convinced?
Speak to state police SI at least for an hour to know their problems. CBI SI has only
three tasks. Investigation, Investigation and Investigation. Nothing else.
Pls remember that whatever you read about tough CBI training above is one of the
easiest when compared to all other police/military/paramilitary forces in India.
Believe it or not, this is the fact.
Gain 1 ; Gain 2; Gain 3; Gain 4; Gain 5; Gain 6; Gain 7; Gain 8 etc etc etc.. They are
only sample links. After checking all these links, would you still prefer other jobs to
CBI in CGL? Try to google to know if some other department raided on CBI and Pls
share me those links so that i can share them here 😀. Even as SI, you will be part
of those teams and in fact you are an executive staff. From these links it is very
clear that CBI is like a fired bullet. It doesn't care who the other person is. It does its
job ruthlessly. Immense job satisfaction with every new case. Every website talks
about UT income in other jobs and they don't tell how riskier such activity is and
what is the stigma such caught person faces. Remember, even for examples
purpose in CBI indoor classes, those departments are referred and imagine how
much background focus is kept on those people. The corrupt keep taking chances
until they meet CBI. CBI can change their fate. It is like meeting the death. All looks
tumbled in life for the accused and he realizes that money can't buy everything. It
will be more convincing if i can share at least one example for this as well.
The real CBI power is felt when you go for raid and house searches. Who may ever
he/she is, whether he is minister or big business man, it doesn't matter. When you
go for searches/raid, they are at your beck and call. All this i am not telling you to
showcase how much powerful the CBI is but how much true service you can render
to the society by catching the big fishes by ignoring their dramas during raids.
Below picture was of true ACB raid.
CBI card is a universal access card to meet any government official irrespective of
his cadre/position. You are Baahubali with your card. For what others generally say
'No', this card makes them to say 'Yes'. So, CBI trainee's life is like a caterpillar. They
face all the difficulties at the initial stages of training and thereafter they are
beautiful butterflies.
You might have already know by now that if any case is sensational in India, that
can only be a CBI case. You can proudly say that you are the IO (Investigating
Officer) of that case. Ex: "Dera Baaba" Raam Rahim case. This is just one example.
You give actual hope to the many of Indians by working efficiently in catching the
disguised criminals.
When CBI can arrest even corrupt army personnel, who the hell are corrupted
politicians/officers of various ranks and posts. Army is the true security of the
nation and even they are not spared.
CBI is a gateway to meet best personalities of any given field. Final place for all
your doubts. You will observe a new dimension in every person you meet in CBI
office and learn something new, be it an officer or criminal. Don't forget that even
criminals are very smart, especially of CBI cases.
Salary of 4600 GP along with 13th month salary. Whether someone agrees or not,
CBI job is considered powerful and it is an established fact. No need to argue with
others on this point.
This CBI job is not like state police where they needs to be available 24*7 for law
and order and there is a concern for their personal leaves. But in CBI, though you
are police, your work is mostly during office hours and get holidays like any other
central govt employee. Workload is only during raids and deadlines. CBI ACB job is
70% office work and 30% field work. But in Special crime, it is more field work and
we may have to stay away from home for few weeks in the interest of the case.
There is lot of touring across India in Special crime and it makes you feel the real
police powers more. All your facilities are taken care then. Read elaborated article
on CBI workload here.
State SI is powerful only in his jurisdiction and they are normal person when they
move to other state for any work. But, CBI SI is respected across India.
In academy, even if you are sick for small reason, you are taken in academy's
ambulance to the hospital. A driver is always available.
You recall your school days as everything is done with discipline and as per the
timetable.
While passing out from the academy, you would feel best physical fitness till date
of your life.
Free weight correction (Reduction/Increase) without the need for spending extra
money and time. In fact, you are being paid 50K+ for this. So, double benefit. I know
few fat people who reduced their weight more than 10 Kgs. Weight reduction
happens only for those who are already having weight more than required and it
doesn't happen with all. So, don't worry thinking that you are already thin and you
will be more thinner.
Academy staff is very friendly and they support you even for personal problem.
They are available over the phone even after office hours.
You are trained by a top class outdoor trainers. It is a privilege in CBI.
When you go out of the academy for anything, most of the localities recognizes
you just by looking at your haircut that you are from CBI. It gives a little sense of
pride. Even local doctors recognize you when you go for treatment.
Best infrastructure and environment in the academy. Academy is very neat and full
of luscious green grass. Campus is noise free with nice chirping of birds. You feel
like taking a casual walk on every day/holiday.
We have a closed auditorium inside the academy with DTS speakers. One recent
Hindi movie with original print on each Wednesday after dinner. For South Indians,
the nearest best shopping & movie mall is RED Mall where you can watch latest
South Indian Movies. Tickets rates are cheaper with very good service quality.
You have departmental exam after completion of 4 yrs as SI for the post of DSP
(5400 GP). It is a gazetted post. Much more powerful. If you crack this exam, you
get an advantage of 12-15 yrs in the department by skipping the intermediate
Inspector post.
CBI department is not like IT, Excise, Customs or any other dept. CBI can be
compared only with CBI but not any other. Your integrity can't be doubtful in any
case and you need to be more disciplined to stay in this department and you get it
through this training. You will feel honored to be part of this family.
You are one among the only 1500 executive cadre (SI and above) in CBI. So, if you
do great job in a case, you are recognized very fast even by the director of CBI
(DCBI).
At informed above, CBI personnel has access to military canteens where we get
most of the items. Items available in main canteens are more.
Hypothetically, If Inspectors of IT, ED, Customs, Excise, Examiner and CBI person
meets at a marriage, a common man might not recognize anyone except ITI. After
some time, the same common man sees all the inspectors giving much more
respect to the CBI person. CBI person will have the last laugh!!
When we are on duty, we are entitled for flight journey in economic class or 2nd class
AC. Flight can be of any airways and no limit on cost of economic class ticket. No flight
for annual LTC. For all applicable allowances you may refer 7th CPC allowances final
report. It is not possible to accommodate all those details here.
Note: Like in Income Tax dept, you are also entitled for mobile bill of Rs 500 per month
and it is generally approved by the SP.
Birthdays of all the cadets are celebrated (of course with our own money) with music
and great cheer. Even working academy officers join this event. Teams are immediately
formed to play any game like basket balls, crickets on weekends.
Keep an umbrella with you so that you can reach class easily from hostel without getting
wet, in case of any rain.
When you join, you will observe that most of the CBI staff are deputed staff which means
they come from BSF, CISF, State Police etc.. So, when you interact with them, you will
observe that they are demoralizing you by saying why did you choose CBI and leave as
soon as possible. Just think, if CBI is not good, what is stopping them to go back to their
parent organization and they never do this and they continue in CBI for more than 10
years by repeatedly requesting for their extension in CBI. Deputed people always have
the option to go back to their parent department whenever they want but they don't. Here
is the proof. I just ignored their statements and it is up to you if you want to consider
them. They may be jealous of your entry into the department as SI at early age (< 30) and
they might have fear about their promotions as you would be a potential competitor for
them in that list.
In academy, Keep your mouth shut (मुँह बंध रखो) while you are with trainers or staff. This is
where a few tries to be smart and end up getting the punishment in disguise, not for that
person alone and may be for all. As every trainee feels he is one of the heroes, keeping
his mouth shut is the toughest job in the training. Despite reading and knowing this fact
here, you will see such people keep doing the same mistake. Secret of happiness in the
academy is to compliant nothing or minimal. All the trainers know your necessities and
common problems. Remember they have already trained 21 batches. The more you take
things for granted and try to argue, more difficult the things would get.
More disciplined the batch is, the more relaxation you will get from the higher staff. The
moment they gave you this relaxation, batch slowly becomes undisciplined and staff
eventually takeout your relaxation. This process you will observe happening in cycles. So,
remain disciplined for happier life. If you are
disciplined, they would be more liberal in phase-2. If not, they would be as strict when
you joined even in phase-2, like it happened for us and they teach you how to tolerate the
frustration.
Wishing the senior ('Jaihind') is mandatory in this police department. It is not optional.
So, people from non-police jobs need to adjust to this practice. Otherwise, they will be
demanded to wish. Get tuned to this habit.
Also, as an example, if an officer name is "Rahul", you can not address him "Rahul Ji" (or
equivalent local language term). You have to say "Rahul Sir". Don't start telling me that
"Ji" in Hindi means "Sir". Go by my suggestion.
Elders says that less luggage during a journey, more comfort. Similarly, lesser the load of
new relationships, more comfortable this journey of CBI job is. Starting from entering the
CBI academy till you retire, try to minimize your relationships as much as possible. Why
do you think some outsider wants to build a strong relationship with you? Simply
because he wants some direct/indirect favour from you, if not immediate may be in near
future. So, you may tend to compromise out of such relationship which is unbecoming of
a public servant and don't forget that CBI always keeps an eye on you and your
movements. To avoid all these, better have lesser/no new relationships.
Stop sharing your phone numbers. Your phone number flows to many people without
your knowledge and you are unnecessarily disturbed as they expect that you can do
something for their problem. At the initial days of your posting, you will be inclined to
show/use your power and subsequently you would change such idea. Mindset in this
aspect would be same as showing your new car/bike/mobile to others until you are
bored of it.
Stop arguing with your seniors after your training is over and posted to a branch. Keep in
mind that your are in probation for initial two years (includes training period) which
means your service rules are temporary and they can take any action on you with no/less
paper work. It means that you can be terminated from the service even during training
period for your abnormal behavior. They can terminate anyone with no great efforts, of
course on critical and real grounds.
Note1: You are deemed to be on probation even after completion of two years, until
orders to that effect are in your hand. So, do NOT go by calendar date of your joining.
Note2: Let us suppose you have completed your probation in some other central govt
department and then joined CBI. If you joined CBI after having opted for lien option, you
would have a choice to go back to your parent organization either because you don't like
CBI or your probation is not completed in CBI for any reason. So, lien gives you a backup
job option. This is a general procedure for any central govt job change and not specific to
CBI. Pls refer Swami's hand book for info on lien procedure.
You can't do ANY commercial activity while you are in govt service. So, Pls leave the
thought of going to coaching centers to deliver lectures and train others for money.
As stated above, working hours in CBI are regular (09:30 to 18:00) and with all holidays.
If there is so much stress, how come the luxury of availing holidays is possible? We may
need to extend for one more hour. Don't go by the posts that are written by people who
just have hearsay information. Don't build an opinion that this department is a prison for
rigorous imprisonment. A few people might extend their working hours if they take the
case as challenge and wants to know the tactics played by the accused. Every case
teaches you sooOO… much. So, CBI personnel will automatically be inclined to work to
crack the case. Given any job in the world, less efficiency needs more time which keeps
one under pressure. Of course, if the case is of national importance and immense focus
by the media, there would pressure from higher officials to complete the task with quality
and in time.
A day before you leave from the academy, they give you place of postings. Until then, no
one, including SP training, has any idea about your probable posting and no use asking
anyone in the academy. You are given few days to report in the branch. The number of
days depends upon the distance from the academy and as per normal transfer rules.
After you are posted in any branch, there is no rule stating how long one should serve in
the branch. They can transfer you anytime to anywhere else in entire India (Ex: Chennai
to Chandigarh) i.e. No zonal or state restrictions. If they want, they can even transfer
you again just after 2 months of your transfer and such scenario is very rare. It is all
administrative convenience and strategy. Only JD and above can transfer an officer, on
the advice of SP. Not everyone like ASP, DSP can transfer the ranks inferior to them.
Each time you are transferred, you get a fancy travel allowance for transferring all your
household articles. You may be even transferred from ACB to Special Crime to Economic
Offenses Wing to Bank Fraud Cell (BSFC). It all depends on the demand for more officers
in a specific area and decided by the higher officials. Once Lokpal act come into force,
no officer that is handling a corruption case can be transferred by any CBI superior
official (including CBI director) unless there is an approval from Lokpal body. So, you are
going to have nice days ahead unless you become boss for whom that clause can give
him big trouble as he loses control over his team.
However, when you are about to complete your training, you get a chance to fill your
priority on place of posting. Read more here.
As SI, you are required to assist an IO (Inspector, DSP, ASP) during raids or for any
documentation work. Hence SI may be called Assistant IO. This is actually good as you
learn the real work without any responsibility, at least for 3-4 years. So, during this period,
SI can afford to do some work related mistakes but not after his first promotion. A single
mistake in a crucial case can even change governments. That is the level of sensitivity of
any case in CBI for which you are the only IO.
No uniform for CBI personnel of any rank (Constable to Director), once he is posted to a
branch. He is given a cubicle in CBI HQ, as shown below, that we generally observe in
software companies. In Hyderabad branch, even an SI is given individual room with
name plate outside. In old branches where the branch buildings are quiet old and small,
it might be difficult even to get a nice place to sit and a table to work. So, what is given
for SI depends on the branch he is posted to.
For SI, dedicated corruption case is not given unless SP feels satisfied with SI's
competency and such recommendation is approved by magistrate and it indeed
happens sometimes due to shortage of staff. This option best suits if any ASP/DSP is
demoted to SI rank for some reason. After you are promoted to Inspector, case is given
to you and hence all the responsibility is on you and you only, not even on lawyer or any
other advisor or supporting technical staff. So, one needs to have leadership qualities to
take the case to a logical conclusion.
In my view, most central government jobs are not suitable jobs if anyone is worried about
transfers and place of posting. Such people may try for state jobs.
Q400) We see in movies that there will be a topper of the batch. Who is he/she?
Exams are conducted after each phase. They are 70% objective and 30% subjective like
writing a report/description. There will be test even for your physical fitness. Best is
selected from each area and they are awarded medals from the hands of director of CBI
on the day of passing out. They don't make any difference to your career if you are the
best. It is just a proud moment. Feeling of better than the best.
Number of such trophies is as per the management wish and it can change every year.
Q410) Can I file RTI to get more information from CBI Academy?
As on date i write this blog, CBI is exempted from RTI. So, it doesn't work. You would get
the same reply even if you apply. But, you can ask for information pertaining to
allegations of corruption against its own officials but not about the other graft cases
probed by CBI.
You can give me your feedback here . Also, it is useful for all if you can raise your
question as a comment as few other aspirants might be having the same/similar
question in their mind. If it is relevant for ALL, i shall definitely make a new question out
of it and answer it as above. If your question is considered, i shall reply to your comment.
Out of curiosity, Pls don't ask me statistical questions (What percentage of ...) or
astrological questions (What would be..) or the questions for which the answer is
already there in articles of this blog. Such questions will be read and ignored and you
would have a feeling that your question is not yet read by me. This blog content is
based on actual facts but not on assumptions or opinions. Hence such measure.
Pls understand that this blog is not the face of CBI administration and hence any admin
questions relating to why there is a delay, what is the policy/procedure on specific item
or any other can't be clarified here.
If you find articles in this blog answered most of your doubts and worth sharing with
your friends and co-aspirants who are also looking for precise information like what i
have presented here, Pls do so. The blog is for the benefit of every aspirant. Before you
raise doubts/questions, Pls go through all other posts of this blog to know the answer
to the question(s) that you are about to ask w.r.t CBI or search at the top of this blog
with your key word to find relevant, if any. I am also looking for an unanswered question
that aspirants at large will be benefited. Despite my tough schedule, I have taken all time
and pain in writing this blog. No one should have unnecessary mental strain or anxiety,
like i had then, just because of lack of clarity on this job of pride.
If you find any information given to be wrong or outdated in this blog, i am ready to
update it for the benefit of all our readers, provided an authentic source for such update
is shared. Motto of this blog is to share exact, true and concise information to all.

If anyone is interested in SCB, they should opt for such branch where
SCB is there. As answered in Q390, it depends on higher authority,
your luck and vacancy there. However, nothing stops you from
requesting them repeatedly.

1.2. You rightly said that CBI is far better than State police. In state
police, you have lot of political interference and you hands are more
tied before you can take any action. Every department of India needs
honest employees and not just CBI and what dept is best depends on
once personal taste on nature of work.
2.2 The same Gita must have also told that all have equal capability
and no one is superior, inferior.

The CBI Academy facilitates cultural integration by assigning roommates from different states, aiming to expose trainees to diverse cultures and languages, which helps them learn to respect various cultural differences . This strategic room assignment plan is part of the Academy's goal to prepare the trainees to work effectively in diverse teams and environments throughout their career . Moreover, interaction with locals and participation in various Academy activities further support cultural adaptation .
CBI trainees initially face significant challenges such as adjusting to the rigorous schedule and disciplined environment, similar to school days, with strict timetables and rules . They undergo both physical and mental challenges, requiring resilience and adaptability .
