Unit 1.4 Disease
What Are we Learning Today = WALT
Know that some diseases can be caused by infection
with viruses, bacteria, parasites or fungi that can be
passed from one host to another.
Unit 1.4 Disease
Words to learn:
Barrier: Something that blocks or stops harmful things, like germs, from
getting into the body.
Defence: The body’s way of protecting itself from germs and diseases.
Host: A living thing (like a person or animal) that provides food and
shelter for another organism, such as a germ or parasite.
Hygiene: Keeping yourself and your surroundings clean to stay healthy and
prevent disease.
Unit 1.4 Disease
Words to learn:
Mucus: A thick, slippery substance made by the body to trap dust, dirt,
and germs, especially in the nose and throat.
Parasite: A small organism that lives on or inside another living thing (the
host) and takes nutrients from it.
Repellent: A substance that keeps insects or animals away.
Vectors: Animals, usually insects like mosquitoes, that carry and spread
germs or diseases from one living thing to another.

Introduction:
Q. 1 Why do you think the children are wearing masks?
Q. 2 What could happened if the children did not wear masks.
Unit 1.4 Disease
Getting started
Q.1 The boy in the picture has chicken pox. Have you

small living things called germs.

Unit 1.4 Disease
Living things that cause disease
Q. 1 What are parasites?
Ans. Parasite is any living thing that lives on or in the body of
another living thing where it cause harms.
Q. 2 What are the different kinds of living things that cause disease?
Ans. Bacteria, viruses, fungus and other parasites.
Bacteria cause disease such as cholera and pneumonia. Not all the
bacteria are harmful.
Unit 1.4 Disease
Living things that cause disease
Viruses are harmful and cause diseases to humans, animals and
plants. Humans get flue, chicken pox and measles from viruses.
Fungi, the yeast is a fungus. Mushrooms are fungi. But some of
them parasites that cause diseases. Ringworm in humans and
animals, athlete's foot in humans are caused fungi.
Other Parasite There are other kind of parasite ( PLASMODIUM)
that can cause infectious disease. e.g. Malaria and dysentery.

Unit 1.4 Disease
Q. 6 Write the different ways of the body defence against diseases.
Ans. 1. Tears contain chemical substances that kill some bacteria.
2. Mucus in the noes, windpipe is sticky and traps germs.
3. Skin act as barrier to stop germs from getting into the body.
4. Acid in the stomach kill germs in the food we have eaten.
Q. 7 Explain how diseases can be spread?
Ans. 1. Diseases can be spread in food, water and air, and by body
contact.
2. Diseases can be spread by insects also.
Unit 1.4 Disease

spread in many
ways.
in air by body contact
in water
in food by insects
Unit 1.4 Disease
Q. 8 How can we prevent the spread of disease that spread in food,
water and air?
Ans. By good hygiene. E.g.
1. Wash our hands with soap and water before eating or
working with food and after going to the toilet.
