I Conditional (Real Present: Possible & Probable)

Should + subj. + infinitive + will/may/can/should + infinitive OR imperative

If it rains, we’ll stay indoors. If you have finished the book, give it to me.

Should it rain, we’ll stay indoors. Should you finish the book, give it to me.

II Conditional (Unreal Present: Possible but Improbable)


Were + subj. + (to – infinitive) + would/might/could + infinitive

If I were you, I’d tell her the truth. If I won the lottery, I’d travel the world

Were I you, I’d tell here the truth. Were I to win the lottery, I’d travel the world.

III Conditional (Unreal Past: Impossible)


Had + Subj. + past participle + would/might/could + have + past participle

If he hadn’t robbed the bank, he wouldn’t have gone to prison.
