RESEARCH
& INNOVATION UPDATES

Next-gen wireless communication

through electronic-photonic integration
Harvard (Cambridge, Massachu-
setts) engineers have created a
breakthrough device that directly
converts digital electronic signals
into analogue optical ones,
bypassing bulky, power-hungry
converters. Built on thin-film
lithium niobate, the electro-optic
digital-to-analogue link (EO-Di-
AL) compresses conversion into a
single chip, delivering speeds up
to 186 gigabits per second—near-
ly 100 times faster than home
internet. Scalable and energy-
efficient, it could revolutionise
AI computing, data centres,
fibre-optic networks, and next-
gen wireless communications by
redefining electronic-photonic

Method found to
prevent cracks in
wearable electronics
Engineers at Brown University (Rhode
Island) have uncovered a hidden weakness
in flexible electronics, from wearables to
foldable phones. They found that cracks in
brittle ceramic electrode layers can spread
into the polymer substrate, reducing durabil-
ity and performance. By adding an inter-
mediate layer to balance elastic mismatch,
they prevented deep cracking across material
combinations. This insight offers a roadmap
for tougher, longer-lasting flexible devices,
paving the way for more reliable wearables,
solar panels, and foldables.

Key Considerations For Selecting

Pick-And-Place Machines For SMT
Selecting a pick-and-place machine involves aligning its capabilities with the type of job and other criteria like speed, precision,
and flexibility. The critical applications column highlights where each criterion is most vital, aiding targeted decision-making. A
well-chosen machine ensures first-pass yields above 99.2%, minimises defects, and meets reliability needs for applications from
prototyping to high-volume, high-reliability production.

industry news
India’s July trade gap hits $27.35 billion high
India’s trade deficit hit an eight-month high of $27.35
billion in July as imports of petroleum, electronics, and
machinery outpaced export gains. Exports rose to $37.24
billion, led by electronics, as well as engineering and
pharmaceuticals, but imports surged to $64.59 billion.
Even with the US tariffs looming and energy risks escalat-
ing, officials remain optimistic about the momentum in
September exports.

US enforces 50% tariffs on Indian exports;

electronics spared
On August 27, the US imposed steep 50% tariffs on key
Indian exports, including textiles, gems, leather, machin-
ery, and marine products under President Trump’s order
targeting Russia-linked trade. Electronics, autos and
pharma are exempt, shielding India’s fast-growing tech
exports. Experts warn of heavy losses in labour-intensive
sectors. India promises relief measures while vowing to
protect farmers, SMEs, and jobs.

Government plans $20 billion outlay

for ISM 2.0
India’s semiconductor push may get a $20 billion boost,
with MeitY seeking Cabinet approval by December
to double incentives under the second phase of India
Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The plan targets fabs,
design, and packaging, benchmarking against US and EU
schemes. Projects like Tata-PSMC and Micron are under-
way, with the first fabs expected to be operational soon
this year. Experts flag global competition and high costs.

India’s non-smartphone electronics exports

cross $14 billion in FY25
India’s electronics exports hit a record $38.57 billion in
FY25, up 32.47% YoY, with non-smartphone products
crossing $14 billion. Key drivers included inverters, telecom
gear, photovoltaic cells, and PCs. Tamil Nadu led in exports.
Backed by chip investments, PLI schemes, and ECMS
rollout, India aims for $200 billion in electronics exports by
2030, strengthening supply chains and reducing imports.

India ramps up critical minerals drive with

global tie-ups
India is accelerating its critical minerals strategy with a
war chest of more than `45 billion for overseas acquisi-
tions and stockpiles, claimed G. Kishan Reddy, Union
Minister of Mines. Among the current joint ventures,
Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) has partnered with the
UAE’s IRH and Russia’s Uranium One for uranium and
rare earths, while advancing lithium projects in Argentina
and scouting for opportunities in Australia and Africa. The
new MMDR Act changes enable larger funding, thereby
bolstering EV and green energy security.

ASHWINI KUMAR SINHA

E
nvironmental sensing plays
a key role in managing air
quality, controlling pollution,
ensuring factory safety, detecting
hazardous gases, and supporting
laboratory monitoring. To be effec-

versatile, and capable of real-time
wireless data transmission. While
most existing solutions are bulky, this
design offers the same functions in a
compact multi-gas sensor module.
The environmental sensor
is designed to record gas data,
