the non-verbal communication—is the opposite of

“Alright! Our topic for today is about the

APPROPRIATE COMMUNICATIVE STYLES
IN VARIOUS SITUATIONS. Here are the At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
objectives, please read.” 1. Define what Communicative style is.

2. Share ideas about the distinctions of the

Communicative Styles in various situations.

3. Create a skit or dialogue using the different

communicative styles.
“Now, let me ask you, What is
COMMUNICATIVE STYLE, and how is it
important in the communication?
“Sir, Communicative Style means the form of
language that the speaker uses which is characterized
by the degree of formality.

“With the appropriate usage of language depending

on the contexts makes a person—a good
communicator.”
“Very well said! A communicative style is also
known as language registers. It refers to the
variety of language used in a specific context or
situation, taking into account factors like
audience, purpose, setting and tone.”

There are 5 different Communicative Styles we

use in communication:

1. Intimate. It is used in talks between two very

close individuals.
Examples: Couples talking about their future
plans, family sharing ideas, and very close
friends sharing secrets.

2. Casual. It is an informal style which is

usually used between friends or even insiders
who have things to share.
Examples: Phone calls, everyday conversation
with friends, chitchats about the latest trends on
Tiktok and Facebook.

3. Consultative. This is unplanned speech with

the speaker using the participation and feedback
of the listener.
Examples: teacher-students, doctor-patient,
salesperson-customer.

4. Formal. It uses formal words and expressions

and is mostly seen in writing rather than
speaking. It also disallows the use of ellipsis.
Examples: Announcements, President’s SONA,
Welcome Address, Graduation Speech

5. Frozen. It is the most formal communicative

style that is used during respectful events and
ceremonies. It is ‘frozen’ or fixed in time and
content.
Examples: Preamble, Lupang Hinirang,
Marriage Vows, and Laws.

“Are there any questions or clarifications?” “None, Sir!

C. Abstraction
“Alright, if you really listen to my discussion, I
will test your learning by asking these questions.
What do you mean by Communicative Styles
again? “Sir, it refers to the variety of language used in a
specific context or situation, taking into account
factors like audience, purpose, setting and tone”

How many Communicative Styles do we have? There are 5, Sir!

What are those, again? Sir, we have:

1. Intimate
2. Casual
3. Consultative
4. Formal
5. Frozen

“Okay, if you were to rate the level of formality of

the communicative styles that we have discussed
where 5 is the highest or most formal and 1 is the Students ratings:
lowest or least formal:
 Formal  Formal - 4
 Frozen  Frozen - 5
 Casual  Casual - 2
 Consultative  Consultative - 3
 Intimate  Intimate - 1

Very Good! Now, with the ratings that you have

given to the communicative styles—which do you
think is the most informal? Most formal? How do Sir, the most informal communicative style is the
you say so? Intimate. Because, it usually occur in a very personal
and private settings, typically between close
relationships that show intimacy.
Excellent! Since the participants talking are
already closed to one another, there is no need to
adjust their language to a formal one. Hence, they
can use slang words, sarcasm and playful teasing
as well as the shared personal experiences.

How about the most formal? Sir, the most formal communicative style is the
Frozen. Because, it is fixed and unchanging. These
are the language used in ceremonial speeches like
vows, anthems, oaths and pledges making it suitable
for situations where precisions, dignity and respect
are paramount.
Very well said!

What Communicative Style you usually observed “Sir, the answers would be based on the situations we
in everyday basis? are in. Of course, if we are chatting with our friends
about something—that is casual. If we are talking
with our parents, siblings or partners, that would be
the time that we will be using the intimate
communicative style.

Excellent! Now, I will be giving you a scenario

and you will try to identify what appropriate
communicative style should be used in the given
scenario.

Example #1:
Aling Marites is feeling nauseous and having fever
for days. She went to Northern Samar Provincial
Hospital for check-up and run necessary tests.

What do you think is the communicative style used “Sir, I think—it’s consultative. Because, Aling
in the first example? Marites went to the hospital to seek help and consult
the doctors about her situation.

Very Good! Nice Answer!

How about for the next example…

Example #2:
Shiela is delivering her valediction in their “Sir, It is formal. Because, she will deliver the
Graduation Ceremony. speech in formal and respectful tone. Graduation
Speeches are formally structured and polished.

“Very Good! Seems like you are ready for the Yes, Sir!
quiz? Aren’t you?
D. Application
“This time, I will divide the class into 5 groups.
We will do it by counting.

Since you already have your respective groups,

you will be creating a dialogue based on the
communicative style assigned to you.

Group 1: Intimate
Group 2: Casual
Group 3: Consultative
