Maru Ragini is a vertical painting.
1. The painting titled ‘Maru Ragani’ is the painting from the
‘Ragamala Series’ painted by Sahibdin a courtier painter of
Mewar in the early 18th century the love story of Dhola Maru.
2. In this painting dhola maru, both king and queen wear highly
ornamented typical Rajasthan attire, shown travelling on an
ornamentally decorated beautiful camel with full enthusiasm
through a desert.
3. The painting has a vertical format with primarily a yellowish
Background and light green foreground. We can see a blue sky
band also in background with plane border.
4. Sharp countours (lines) are used for showing Minute details with
black and brown outlines are shown while drawing the camel.
5. The whole composition shows rhythm, motion and balance.
6. Two male escorts are running along the camel-riding couple.
7. One male attendant is leading the camel.
8. A hunting dog is also running ahead of the two escorts.
9. This is a 2d painting like folk paintings in flat colours.
10. Transparent white colour also used in the costume.
11. Camel is well decorated and in full enthusiasm.
12. The king is holding a flower in his right hand and looking at the queen. All the faces are in profile (ek chasham)
13. On the top of the painting Maru Shri Ragini is written in devnagri. The samvat means circa 1885 century.
14. It is a painting of Baramasa. In the painting facial expressions are shown with Rhythmic lines.
Aesthetic parameters:
1. The female figure has worn a Ghagra and Choli with transparent Dupatta knowingly to show all the jewelry.
Rajasthani style is also depicted and sharp pointed nose with fish stretch eyes.
2. The king has worn long figure dress and a turban of Mughal style.
3. Two of the escort are with swords trying to protect the king one of the attendants were attending both of them
and a white dog is also seen running beside them. Camel is well decorated.
4. The color that has been use are shades of yellow, red and a little orange and blue. In the painting facial
expressions are shown with Rhythmic lines. The colours are bright and natural,
5. There is calligraphy on the top of a vertical frame of the painting written in black and orange background in
the Devanagari script which adds the glory to the painting.

1. Love and devotion of the royal couple for each other.
2. Loyalty of the attendants towards their master. They are accompanying his master to ensure his well-
being
