Worksheet 4 Output devices
Unit 4 Input and output devices
Name: Taehui (David) Lee..................................................................... Class: 10MRG.........
16/16
Task 1
1. A manufacturer of children’s toys wants to develop a toy that is aimed to keep young
children, in the rear of the car, occupied on long journeys.
The toy will have the following features:
Displays films and videos
Plays Music
Has objects at the sides, such as squares, circles and triangles that move in and out
in time with music
(a) The device will need a display to show the films and videos.
State two other output devices that the toy will need.
Speaker, Actuators -2
(b) Choose one technology for the display and justify your choice.
Either choice is acceptable with the correct justification.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is the most suitable choice for this toy. For a device used by
children in the back of the car it should be durable, energy-efficient, and able to display
clear video in different lighting conditions. LCD screen’s fit all these conditions. It is Cost-
effective, energy-efficient, bright, high-quality color images and video, and lightweight.

Task 2
1. There are two types of technology that are used in projectors.
State what each technology is and describe how it works.
DLP (Digital Light Processing)
How it works:
A Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) chip containing millions of tiny, microscopic mirrors is
used to create the image. Each mirror can be individually tilted to reflect light through a
color wheel and onto the screen, or to absorb it, to form an image.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
How it works:
Light from a backlight shines through a layer of liquid crystals. These crystals are
electrically charged to change their orientation, which controls how much light passes
through to create the image.
2. Research DLP and LCD projectors and complete the table below to show the advantages
and disadvantages of each.
Advantages and disadvantages of DLP and LCD projectors.
DLP advantages and disadvantages LCD advantages and disadvantages
Advantage: Smooth, fil-like image with not
Advantage: Higher brightness
visible pixel structure
Advantage: Good contrast ratios and deeper Advantage: More accurate color saturation
black levels and fidelity
Advantage: Sealed optics prevent dust
Advantage: Doesn’t have rainbow effect,
particles from getting inside and appearing as
unlike DLP’s
dark sports on the image
Advantage: Generally more portable and
Advantage: Higher overall light efficiency, as
physically robust due to simpler internal
less light is wasted in the optical system
design.
Disadvantage: Can suffer from the “rainbow
Disadvantage: Has “screen door effect”
effect” (flashes of color) which can be
where the pixel grid can be visible
annoying.

Disadvantage: Often has lower brightness Disadvantage: optics are not sealed; dust
efficiency (my not be as bright as LCD with can enter and create small, permanent dark
the same wattage lamp) spots on the projected image
Disadvantage: potential for LCD panel
Disadvantage: Color wheel can be a point of
degradation over many years where colors
mechanical failure over very long time.
can shift or uniformity can be lost
