SECTION B: 20 MARKS
3. Read the following passage and answer the question that follows

Food is essential for life because it provides us with nutrients for energy, body building and protection from
illness.
Water is even more important than food. Water makes about 60 percent of total weight of the body. The
body loses about three litres of water by passing urine, sweating and by breathing out moist from the lungs.
In order to maintain good health, this water must be replaced. However, this does not mean that we must
drink three litres of liquid every day because most food that we eat contain much fluids. For example,
mangoes contain a sweet fluid.

Page 2
As soon as the fluid is reduced, our health is affected. When the body loses of fluid a person normally dies
unless some way is found to quickly replace the lost fluid. That is why a person can live for only a few hours
in a desert without water. Diseases such as Cholera or continuous vomiting particularly in babies ar
dangerous because the body loses a lot of water to replace the lost fluid.
When patients suffering from loss of body fluid are brought to hospital, they are given a salt solution. This
is a mixture of salt and water. This solution is allowed to drip into a vein and it is only stepped when the
patient is able to obtain the necessary fluid by more normal means. This way of providing the body with
the necessary fluid can continue for days.
