ACTIVITY 1: FAULT FINDER
OBJECTIVES
● Use the PHIVOLCS FaultFinder to identify faults near your residence, school, or
community.
● Assess the potential hazard posed by the nearest fault from your residence, school, or
community.
MATERIALS
● Electronic gadget with internet connectivity, camera, and GPS application.
● PHIVOLCS FaultFinder
● Printed activity sheet
PROCEDURE
1. Determine your current location or the location of your school or residence using the
GPS of your electronic device.
2. Access PHIVOLCS FaultFinder using your electronic device.
3. Using the PHIVOLCS FaultFinder, determine the nearest active fault from your current
location or the location of your school or residence. Take note of the name of the
identified fault system and its relative distance to your location.
4. After identifying the name, research its history of activity, specifically:
a. the last major earthquake involving the said fault occurred;
b. the frequency of earthquakes along the fault; and
c. the average and strongest magnitude or intensity of the earthquake involving
the said fault.
5. Identify possible vulnerabilities within the community, such as:
a. physical and environmental vulnerabilities in the form of possibly unstable land
such as slopes and cliffs, and nearby bodies of water like lake, river, sea, etc.
b. social vulnerabilities in the form of high-risk or unstable types of housing and
industries, high population density, presence of weak or old structures, absence
of evident evacuation sites, or nearby hospitals, fire stations, etc.
6. Analyze the potential hazard posed by the nearest fault to the community by tabulating
the information in the matrix.
GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. Why is it important to research the history of a fault and its effect on the surrounding
community?
