Wi-Fi Radiation Effects on Seed Growth

The document is a biology investigatory project by Gullapalli Sree Yasasvi, exploring the effects of Wi-Fi radiation on seed germination and growth. The experiment involved comparing the growth of garden cress seeds in the presence and absence of Wi-Fi radiation, revealing that seeds near the router exhibited stunted growth and higher mortality rates. The results concluded that Wi-Fi radiation negatively impacts plant growth, contradicting the initial hypothesis that there would be no effect.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I have taken efforts in the project, however, it would not have been possible without
the kind support and help of many individuals. I would like to thank my principal, Mr.
R Venkateswer Rao, and my school for providing me with facilities required to do my
project. I am highly indebted to my biology teachers, Mrs. Sridevi Vijay Shinde, for
her invaluable guidance which has sustained my efforts in all the stages of this project
work. I would like to thank my parents for their continuous support and
encouragement. I would also like to thank my fellow classmates in developing the
project and to the people who have willingly helped me out with their abilities.

INTRODUCTION
With the rapidly increasing number of artificial sources of Electromagnetic (EM) fields, their
effect on living organisms has to be noted.

The most common object of exposure to EM Fields are humans who are exposed to
electromagnetic radiation in the environment, at home and at workplaces, due to the increase
in Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) networks.

To understand the effect of EM Fields on living organisms, we can experiment their effects on
plants. Plants are very sensitive because they can perceive a lot of perceptions from the
environment.

1
INTRODUCTION
Wi-Fi routers primarily release EM waves with precise frequencies of 2.4GHz or 5GHz
depending on the router.

2.4GHz approximately corresponds to a wavelength of 12cm and 5GHz approximately

corresponds to a wavelength of 6cm.

2
AIM
To understand the effect of Wi-Fi radiation on germination and growth of different
seeds

HYPOTHESIS
There will be no effect of Wi-Fi radiation on the germination and growth of plants

3
EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS
The experimental conditions for both bowls were:

• They received the same amount of water at same times of day.

• They were placed at the same height.
• They received the same amount of sunlight.

4
PROCEDURE
In this experiment, I planted the seeds of Lepidium Sativum (garden cress) into two
identical bowls. The same content of the seeds were filled into the bowls.

The first sample (A) was in the room with no effect of the Wi-Fi radiation.

The second sample (B) was placed in the room, in close proximity of the Wi-Fi Router
with the transmission frequency from 2.412 to 2.472 GHz.

Note: The initial weight of both bowls was 100grams.

5
RESULTS
The experiment was conducted for 12 days.

The bowls were weighed on a digital scale on the first, fifth, tenth and twelfth day:
DAY OF MEASUREMENT WEIGHT OF SAMPLE ‘A’ WEIGHT OF SAMPLE ‘B’
(in grams) (in grams)
1. 100 100
5. 103 133
10. 92 134

7
RESULTS
Till the fifth day of the experiment, the plants showed of small differences of
germination and growth.

After the fifth day, a significant number of seeds placed near the Wi-Fi router had
not germinated. Many of these seeds were dead and had dark color, which was
significantly different from the seeds in the second bowl.

The germinating sprouts near the router were shorter and weaker.

8
RESULTS
On the tenth day of the experiment plants near to the Wi-Fi router, which
germinated, had problem with growth and their length had not changed. They also
showed reduced water intake (which could justify the significant weight difference
between the sample ‘A’ and ‘B’).

On the last twelfth day, the plants in sample A were visually vital and had a clear
green color signifying normal growth.

The plants in sample B were withered and the vegetation was less dense when
compared to the plants in sample A.
9
CONCLUSION
My hypothesis was proven wrong.

The plants growing in EM radiation grew significantly less than the plants growing
normally.

Hence, it can be concluded that Wi-Fi radiation effects germination and growth of
plants.

10
PRECAUTIONS
The plants must be watered regularly.
Both samples must be in the same conditions.
Both samples must be protected from external sources of error (like pathogens, etc.)

FURTHER SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION

The experiment can be conducted in a more suitable lab environment to provide a
more accurate results with the help of proper lab equipment's or apparatus.
