Fill in the gaps with the past form of the verbs

Last year I (fly) to Greece to visit my sister who lives


on a beautiful island. The flight (take) three hours but it
only (cost) me twenty pounds as it was a special deal
on the Internet. My sister (meet) us at the airport and
we (drive) to her house near the beach but she
(can/not) make it on time.

Every day we (sunbathe) and (swim) on the


beautiful deserted beach. We (spend) the evenings
chatting in her garden but we (not/eat) seafood or
(drink) the delicious local white wine.

One day I (swim) out to a small island . When I


(come) back to the beach I (feel) tired so I went to
sleep. Once, while I was half asleep I (think) I

1. THEORY

1.1 FUTURE 1 AND 2 : going to and present continuous

Can you explain the difference between the two following sentences:

I am going to get married next year.

I am getting married next year.

a) People often tend to omit the form ‘to go’ after ‘going to’.

Ex: I’m going to London rather than I’m going to go to London.

b) The form ‘Be going to + infinitive’ can be translated by [‘aller’ au


présent + infinitif] in French.

Ex: I’m going to see my friends at the weekend.  Je vais voir mes amis le week-end.

c) The ‘Present continuous’ form can be translated by [présent] in
French.

Ex: I’m seeing my friends at the weekend.


 Je vois mes amis le week-end.

d) You can often use one form or the other (see examples above) but
in some cases you have to choose one form rather than the other.

Ex: Pupil to teacher:


 I’m going to study more.
>< I am studying more.

Your cousin is coming from Canada tomorrow:


 My cousin is arriving tomorrow.
>< My cousin is going to arrive tomorrow.

e) The ‘Be going to + infinitive’ form is also used for predictions in a


near future.

Ex: It is cloudy. It is going to rain.
