2. Course Objectives
In addition to understanding the above concepts, we will also have other fundamental
goals to accomplish this year.
You will be able to communicate mathematical ideas orally and in writing
You will be an improved problem solver
You will be able to think critically and question ideas
You will be able to relate mathematical ideas to the real world
You will learn how to work in teams to accomplish a task.
Most importantly, you will have fun and learn to appreciate math!!!
3. Required Materials
You MUST bring the following daily:
Chromebook (supplied)
Paper and pencil
Graphing calculator (preferably the TI-83 or TI-84)
3 ring binder (2 inch recommended)
Compass
Protractor
Ruler
4. Grading Procedures
a) Assessments- 90%
b) Homework- 10%
Assessments- There will be about 2 or 3 summative assessments per quarter. You must
use pencil on your assessment. I recommend showing work because I will give partial
credit for correct work shown (unless otherwise stated). I will give at least 5 days prior
notice for each assessment. Assessments may have the option be retaken/corrected to
improve your grade (guidelines will follow and be discussed in class).
Homework- There will be homework given almost every day! Each assignment is worth
2 points. You will lose points for late work, not having it entirely completed, or for
having significant amount wrong. Homework will be graded in a variety of ways, but
you will almost always get full credit if you have it done on time!! If it is not done on the
due date, homework can be handed in up until the day of the chapter assessment. After
that, the score will result in a zero. A list of assignments will be posted on the bulletin
board as well as on the website. You MUST show work to get full credit. Correct your
work carefully, I will be checking. Grading errors will result in a lower score.
Zero policy- Any zero not taken care of by the summative assessment automatically
disqualifies you from earning and extra points back onto the assessment.
Absences- If you are absent, you have the amount of days you were absent to turn in your
homework. This is for excused absences only; NO credit will be given for unexcused
absences- this includes assessments!! If you are absent the day before an assessment,
you are still responsible for taking the assessment the next day since I give you plenty of
notice. You must come to me for any make up work missed, I will not search for you!
Grades- The grading scale can be found in your student planner. I will inform you of
grades about every 2 weeks. I recommend you keep track of your own grade, that way
you will not have to wait for me. I will bump grades up (i.e. a B+ to an A-) for students
who participate, are attentive, and put forth their best effort at the end of each quarter (so
your class attitude does count!). You will receive the grade that YOU earn.
5. Classroom Guidelines
Talking out of turn will NOT be tolerated!
I will treat you with respect. I expect the same treatment from you and for you to
treat your classmates with respect.
Come to class on time and prepared.
Come to class with a positive attitude and ready to learn!
An ‘A’ is not your right, it is something you earn.
The bell does not dismiss you, I do. Do not pack or line up at the door until I say.
Do not disrupt the learning of others.
Do not play calculator games or use other electronic devices in my classroom.
