Learning Objectives:
The objective of this assignment is to evaluate your understanding about Islamic Finance in
Pakistan.

Case:
Islamic finance in Pakistan has a history shaped by the country's desire to align its economic
system with Islamic principles. Early attempts made to establish an Islamic financial system in
Pakistan, particularly during the 1960s and 1980s. These efforts reflect Pakistan's unique socio-
political environment and aspirations for an economic system that avoids Riba (interest), which
is prohibited in Islam.

Questions:
Explain the background and initial steps in the 1960s and 1980s period for Islamic finance ideas
in Pakistan. (5 Marks)

Identify and explain at least two challenges Pakistan faced in implementing interest-free banking
during the 1980s. (5 Marks)

Guidelines:

Word Count: Each answer should be around 150–200 words.


References: Cite relevant laws, historical events, and any literature from Islamic scholars that
have influenced Islamic finance development in Pakistan.
