INSTRUCTIONS
 There are Three questions attempt all.
 Time allowed is only TWO hours.
 Follow all University regulations

QUESTION ONE (10 MARKS)

(a) Find in terms of t if and simplify your answer.


(2marks)

(b) The sum of the first N – terms of a series is


i) Obtain an expression for the N – th term of the series.
ii) Prove that the series is geometric, and state the value of the first term and the common
ratio of the geometric progression ‘GP’.
(1.5 marks each)
(c) A group of students consists of 17 girls and 15 boys. Twenty two of them play handball while 16
play basketball. Among the boys, 12 play handball 11 play basketball and 10 play both games.
Among the girls, 3 do not play either of the games.
(i) Summarize the given information using Venn Diagrams.
(1mark)
(ii) How many students play either handball or basketball?
(2marks)
(iii) How many girls play both games?
(2marks)

QUESTION TWO (10 MARKS)


(a) (i) Mention one practical application of differentiation.
(1mark)
(ii) Determine the coordinates and nature of any turning points on the curve represented by
the function y = x3 – 7.5x2 + 18x + 6
(3marks)

(b) The study manual printers have a particular problem with delivery toward the OUT HQ, at the
same time there is problem in processing the study material by respective Lecturers. All deliveries
must be processed in a single day, although there is a number of processing machines available,

they are very expensive to run. A researcher has developed the function y = 12x – 2a – ax2 to
describe the profit (y in Tsh.) Given the number of the machine used ‘x’ and the number of
deliveries ‘a’ in a day;

REQUIRED
(i) Show that the system is uneconomical if 4 deliveries are made in one day.
(3marks)
(ii) If three deliveries are made in one day, find the number of processing machines that
should be used in order that the profit is maximized.
(3marks)
QUESTION THREE (10 MARKS)
(a) Find the positive values of x that satisfies the equation;
Log2x = Log4(x + 6)
(3marks)

(b) A small household poultry keeper with 150 birds recorded his egg collection for 30 days as
follows:

REQUIRED
(i) Make a frequency distribution of class size 10 eggs with the lower class limit of the lowest
class as 61.
(3marks)
(ii) From the distribution calculate the average egg collection and the variance if the running
cost per day is 2000/= and she sells an egg at 60/=, compute the average net profit in 30
days rounded to the nearest shilling.
