Your parents’ music is better than yours… Or is it?
One may argue that your parents and grandparents music is better than
the music of today, but is it, really? I myself prefer to listen to pop
and rock and roll music of the 70’s, 80’s, and yes, even 90’s music here
and there. However, if you take the time to listen to the American Top 40
countdowns of yesteryear, you may be surprised to hear that some songs
which made the charts at any particular time could be classified as, at
best, bland, or at worst… just terrible. Oftentimes, these songs stayed
on the charts only for a brief period of time. These are the songs that
simply didn’t catch on or transcend well into later years.
Individuals who remember these decades will often look back and feel
nostalgic for the good music of their childhood or young adulthood.
Living during the time period these songs first hit the airwaves have
caused our parents and grandparents to build an emotional attachment to
these songs, often leaving the more forgettable songs by the wayside. So,
next time someone says, “They sure don’t make music like they used to”,
feel free to share with them that their favorite era of music had some
substandard songs too.

One-Hit Wonderland
Popular music has had its fair share of one hit wonders. These are
artists who are known for that one mega hit, but could never reclaim their
moment in the spotlight with a successful follow-up single or album. The
question is, how does a musical act end up in one-hit wonderland?
Perhaps some one-hit wonders are just not talented enough in the
first place. Artists such as these often record a hit song at just the
right time, and it catches on like fire. Other musical acts may ride the
coattails of more competent artists’ success. These one-hit wonders are
artists whose talent can’t stand on its own, and their biggest hit is due
to incorporating another artists’ work. Unfortunately for them, these
artists were never able to produce a successful follow-up hit.
However, some artists who are one-hit wonders on the US Top 40 charts
are able to have modest international success. Some follow-up singles on
international charts simply don’t catch on as well in American mainstream
media. It’s also important to think about artists who are well-known or
respected for their overall work, but only have one charting single. They
are too well known for their entire bodies of work, and thus cannot be
one-hit wonders.
In all, individuals can determine that one-hit wonders are artists
who only have one chart-topping hit with no successful follow-up singles,
or a considerable fan base. While some of these artists may continue to
make music or even perform at concerts, they will still be known best for
their only chart-topping song.
