19. State one factor affecting chemical equilibrium and explain its effect briefly.
20. If ΔH = –120 kJ mol⁻¹ and ΔS = –200 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹, predict whether the reaction will be
spontaneous at 300 K.
Section C (20 marks) Answer any FOUR questions.
(Each question carries 5 marks)
21. a) Calculate the molar mass of a gas if 2.5 g occupies 1.4 L at STP.
b) How many molecules are present in this amount of gas?
(NA = 6.022 × 10²³ mol⁻¹)
22. a) Explain Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.
b) Calculate the uncertainty in velocity of an electron if the uncertainty in position is 1 ×
10⁻¹⁰ m.
(h = 6.626 × 10⁻³⁴ J s, mass of electron = 9.1 × 10⁻³¹ kg)
23. a) Draw and explain the Lewis structure of CO₂.
b) State whether the molecule is polar or non-polar with justification.
24. For the reaction:
2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g)
a) What will be the effect on equilibrium if:
i) temperature is increased
ii) pressure is increased
b) Name the principle used to predict these changes.
25. a) Define enthalpy change of reaction.
b) Calculate ΔH for the reaction using Hess’s law:
C(s) + O₂(g) → CO₂(g) ΔH = –393.5 kJ
H₂(g) + ½O₂(g) → H₂O(l) ΔH = –285.8 kJ
Find ΔH for:
CH₄(g) + 2O₂(g) → CO₂(g) + 2H₂O(l)
