Gen AI and Predictive AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) encompasses intelligent machines that learn and solve problems, with Generative AI focusing on creating original content based on user prompts, while Predictive AI analyzes data patterns to forecast future outcomes. Both types of AI have distinct benefits, such as personalization and constant availability for Generative AI, and enhanced decision-making for Predictive AI, but they also face limitations like inaccuracies and ethical concerns. Ultimately, Generative AI is innovative and creative, whereas Predictive AI is data-driven and analytical.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the art of making intelligent machines.

AI-powered
machines can learn, plan, solve problems, and even mimic human thinking. This
is achieved through machine learning, which allows machines to improve without
explicit programming. AI is rapidly transforming our world, from powering
virtual assistants to revolutionizing industries like healthcare and finance.
Generative AI
Generative AI (gen AI) is artificial intelligence that responds to a user’s prompt
or request with generated original content, such as audio, images, software code,
text or video.
Gen AI models are trained on massive volumes of raw data. These models then
draw from the encoded patterns and relationships in their training data to
understand user requests and create relevant new content that’s similar, but not
identical, to the original data.
Most generative AI models start with a foundation model, a type of deep
learning model that “learns” to generate statistically probable outputs when
prompted. Large language models (LLMs) are a common foundation model for
text generation, but other foundation models exist for different types of content
generation.
Generative AI characteristics
• Generates original text, images, videos, audio, and code. Examples include
ChatGPT for text and DALL-E for images.
• It identifies the underlying patterns, structures, and relationships in its training
data to produce realistic and novel content.
• It is very adaptable as it can be fine-tuned to perform different tasks across
various industries, such as writing a blog post, generating code, or answering
complex questions.
• Can create customized content for individual users based on their preferences,
from personalized recommendations to tailored marketing messages.
• Can sometimes generate inaccurate, misleading information because it creates
content based on learned probabilities rather than concrete facts.
EXAMPLE
1. Some of the well-known generative AI apps to emerge in recent years include
ChatGPT and DALL-E from OpenAI, Microsoft’s Bing Chat, Google’s Gemini,
and Adobe Firefly.
2. Gen AI image tools can create pictures in response to prompts for countless
subjects and styles. The more detailed the prompt, the better the image or video
quality becomes. Some AI tools, like Generative Fill in Adobe Photoshop, can
add new elements to existing works, like adding Winnie the Pooh into a famous
Van Gogh.
3. Gen AI systems are good at mimicking human writing. It can respond to
prompts for content creation on practically any topic. It can support writing on a
wide range of requests. Using written text and sample audio of a person’s voice,
gen AI vocal tools can create narration or singing that mimic the sounds of real
humans.
4. Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered assistant built into Microsoft Office apps,
including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It enhances productivity by automating
tasks such as writing, data analysis, and email management. Using natural
language, it can help simplify complex functions and focus on higher-value tasks.
5. Generative AI can design engaging visuals and craft compelling ad and sales
copy customized for each target audience.

Benefits of generative AI
Personalisation: Gen AI models can remember previous interactions, which
results in more coherent and relevant conversation experiences for users. Gen AI
can generate quick responses, which produces rapid interactions and real-time
applications.
Constant availability: Generative AI operates continuously without fatigue,
providing around-the-clock availability for tasks like customer
support chatbots and automated responses.
Limitations of generative AI
• Hallucinations: Generative models, particularly large language models,
may produce confident but factually incorrect or entirely fabricated
information, often referred to as hallucinations. These outputs may appear
realistic, making them difficult to detect without external verification.
• Threats to security, privacy and intellectual property: Generative AI
models can be exploited to generate convincing phishing emails, fake
identities or other malicious content that can fool users into taking actions
that compromise security and data privacy.

Predictive AI
Predictive AI, as the name suggests, works by analyzing existing patterns in data
and using this understanding to predict future outcomes or trends. It uses complex
algorithms and machine learning to identify patterns and correlations in the raw
data and then applies these insights to make predictions about what might happen
next.
Predictive AI models enhance the speed and precision of predictive analytics and
and can help enterprises make informed decisions regarding the next step to take
for their business.

Predictive AI characteristics
• Analyzes existing data to make informed predictions about future events,
trends, or behaviors.
• Uses statistical methods and machine learning algorithms (like regression
and classification) to find correlations in structured data, such as
spreadsheets and databases.
• The accuracy of predictions relies heavily on the quality, quantity, and
relevance of the historical data it is trained on.
• The primary goal is to provide statistically accurate forecasts, with model
performance measured by metrics like precision and recall.
Benefits of predictive AI
• Predictive AI helps anticipate future trends. It enables data-driven
recommendations, supports upselling efforts, enhances customer service,
and optimizes inventory management.
• AI-powered insights help reduce uncertainty in key business decisions.
When implemented effectively, predictive AI increases the likelihood of
successful outcomes, such as in your inventory management.
• It can analyze consumer behavior to identify and anticipate consumer
trends. This capability is beneficial for your targeted and personalized
marketing campaigns.

Limitations of predictive AI
• Data quality and availability: AI models rely on high-quality,
comprehensive datasets. Incomplete, biased, or inaccurate data can lead to
flawed predictions.
• Ethical concerns: AI-driven forecasting raises concerns about privacy,
bias, and fairness.
• Interpretability: Many AI models, particularly deep neural networks, lack
interpretability, making it difficult to detect potential biases

EXAMPLE:
1. Predictive AI can predict events even human behavior. Retail businesses can
use this ML tool to predict what (or how, or when) customers are more likely to
purchase their products. This can streamline supply chain, marketing, and staffing
plans and processes.
2. Predictive AI in healthcare can help identify disease outbreaks, assess high-
risk patients, and determine the most successful treatments. For instance, the
Mayo Clinic integrates AI models to predict patient deterioration and personalize
treatment plans.
3. By analyzing large data sets and correlating financial information with other
business trends, predictive AI enhances the accuracy of financial forecasts. For
example, JPMorgan Chase uses AI-driven models to improve credit risk
assessment and detect fraudulent transactions in real time.
4. Banks employ predictive AI to spot suspicious transactions in real time that
signify fraudulent activities.

Both generative and predictive AI have their unique strengths and limitations and
can be leveraged in different contexts. In essence, Generative AI is all about
creating new and original results, it's forward-looking, inventive, and geared
towards innovation. Predictive AI, on the other hand, is primarily data-driven. It
uses historical data to predict future outcomes, making it an excellent tool for
forecasting trends, anticipating customer behavior, and driving decision-making.
