Joy, Gratitude, and Giving: Lessons from Festivals

Across the globe, there are numerous varieties of festivals being celebrated. However, the
core values of each festival are similar in that they collectively focus on providing joy, being
thankful and sharing through giving. Festivals allow individuals to come together and
connect with their family, culture and create a sense of community, while also providing an
opportunity to disconnect from daily life.
The most critical lesson that is provided by holidays, festivals or celebrations is the
experience of joy. The colours of Holi, the lights of Diwali and the music associated with
Christmas all provide opportunity to create joyful moments. However, the joy experienced
during these types of occasions is not simply an opportunity to celebrate. It's an opportunity
to laugh and share positive experiences with others. The more an experience is shared with
others, the greater the level of joy that it creates within the individual or group.
Gratitude is another lesson provided through holidays, festivals or celebrations. Many
celebrations occur during harvest time, or when there is a religious tie, or a historical tie. All
of these events serve to remind individuals to be thankful for what they have received.
Another lesson that is provided through the celebration of holidays, festival or celebrations is
that of giving. During these types of occasions, people are encouraged to perform charitable
acts, exchange gifts and help those less fortunate than themselves. Examples of this would be
donating food, clothing, or money, which serves as a reminder of how much empathy and
responsibility toward society plays in one's life.
Ultimately, holidays, festivals or celebrations are not just meant to be enjoyed. They are
meant to pass on important life lessons, by providing joy, encouraging gratitude and
developing the practice of giving to others. The values developed by the above examples will
create a more caring and unified society.
