Topic Coplanar and Concurrent forces
1. Two forces are acting at a point as shown. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant. (Ans: Rx = 119
N, Ry = 83.65 N)
2. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant (Ans: R = P, 𝜽 = 𝟏𝟐𝟎𝒐)
3. Two ropes are ties together at C. If the maximum permissible tension in each rope is 3.5 kN, what is the
maximum force that can be applied and in which direction?
4. Draw the free body diagram (FBD) of a sphere of weight W resting on a frictionless surface.
5. A bar AB of weight W is hinged at A to the wall and is supported by string BD in the vertical plane. Draw its
FBD.
6. Two similar spheres P and Q each of weight W rest inside a hollow cylinder which in itself rests on a horizontal
plane. Draw the FBD of (a) both spheres together (b) sphere P and (c) sphere Q
7. An L shaped body ABC of negligible weight is hinged at A with a force F acting at end C. Find the angle 𝜃
which the force should make with the horizontal to keep the edge AB of the body vertical. AB = 0.4 m and BC
= 0.3m.
8. A ball of weight W is supported from a string of length ‘l’ and is pulled by a horizontal force ‘F’. the weight is
displaced by a distance ‘d’ from the vertical position as shown. Find the angle 𝛼 , forces ‘F’ and tension in string
(T) in the displaced position.
9. Two smooth cylinders of weight 445 N each and radius of 152 mm are connected at their centers by a string AB
of length 𝑙 = 406 mm and rest on a horizontal plane. A third cylinder of weight 890 N rests on the two cylinders
and has a radius of 152 mm. find the forces in the string and the reactions on the floor at the point of contact.
(Ans: T1 = T2 = 597.87N, RD = 890 N)
10. A weight W1 is suspended from a small ring at C supported by two chords AC and BC. The chord AC is fixed
while chord BC passes over a frictionless pulley at B and carries a weight W2. If W1 = W2 = W and 𝛼 = 500
find 𝛽
11. A prismatic bar AB of length ‘l’ is hinged at A and supported at B. Neglecting friction, determine the reaction
RB at B due to the weight Q of the bar. (Ans: RB = (Q/2)Cos𝜶)
12. Two beams A and B are arranged as shown. Find the reaction at D due to force of 1000 N acting at B.
13. A uniform wheel of 60 cm diameter weighing 1000 N rests against a rectangular block 15 cm high. Find the
least force required when acting through the center of the wheel will just turn the wheel over the corner of the
block. Also find the angle 𝜃 which the least force shall make with the perpendicular dropped from the geometric
center of the wheel to the point of contact of wheel and block.
14. A cylinder of weight W and radius ‘r’ is supported in the horizontal position against a vertical wall by a bar AB
of negligible weight. The bar is hinged to the wall at A and supported at B by a horizontal rope BC. Find the
minimum value of angle 𝜃 that the bar should make with the wall so that the tension in the rope is minimum.
Assume frictionless conditions.
15. A rigid bar CABD is acted upon by two equal horizontal forces P and C and D. Find the reactions at supports.
(Ans: Ra = 0.25P, Rb = 0.25N)
16. Owing to the weight W of a locomotive shown, reactions at points A and B will be equal to W/2. When the
locomotive is pulling the train and the drawbar pull P is just equal to the total friction at points of contact A and
B, find the magnitude of reactions.
17. The four wheels of a locomotive produce vertical forces on the horizontal girder AB. Determine the reactions
at supports a and B if the loads P and Q are 90 kN and 72 kN respectively. (Ra = 177.75 kN, Rb = 164.25 kN)
18. A beam AB is hinged at A and supported at B by a vertical chord which passes over a frictionless pulley at C
and carries at its end a load P. Find the distance ‘x’ from A at which a load ‘Q’ must be placed on the beam if
it is to remain in equilibrium in a horizontal position. Neglect self-weight of the beam. (Ans: x = Pl/Q)
19. A prismatic bar AB of weight Q = 44.5 N is supported by 2 vertical wires and carries at D a poad P = 89 N as
shown. Determine the tension in wires at A and B. (Ans: Ta = 89 N, Tb = 44.5 N)
20. A beam is supported and loaded as shown. Find reactions at A and B.
21. Three beams AB, BC and CD are hinged at the ends and loaded as shown. Find reactions at A, E, F and D.
22. Two prismatic bars AB and CD are welded together in the form of a rigid T and suspended in a vertical plane
as shown. Determine the angle 𝜃 that the bar AB will make with the vertical when a load of 100 N is applied at
end D. The two bars are identical and each weighs 50 N. (Ans: 𝜽 = 𝟏𝟓. 𝟖𝟔𝒐 )
23. A 3 wheeler scooter of weight 2 kN and a driver of weight 0.5 kN are shown in figure where G and D denotes
the positions of centers of gravity of scooter and driver respectively. Find the reactions at the wheels A, B and
C of the scooter for equilibrium conditions to exist. (Ans: Ra = Rb = 0.95 kN, Rc = 0.6 kN)
