Finite Element Analysis (ME5204)
Potential project topics
Potential flow over two-dimensional body Objective of this project is to study the
potential flow over two dimensional body, viz., circular cylinder, ellipse, NACA hydrofoils.
Influence of the shape, angle of attack on the pressure distribution and coefficient of Lift
and Drag to be studied.
Computation of acoustic band-gap in phononic crystals Objective to compute
frequencies at which acoustic wave cannot pass through the material. Ref: A modified
smoothed finite element method (M-SFEM) for analyzing the band gap in phononic crys-
tals, Acta Mechanica, v230, 2279 - 2293, 2019.
Turing pattern formation
• Objective is to look at the spatial pattern formation in an epidemic model by a cross-
diffusion term. Ref: A fully adaptive numerical approximation for a two-dimensional
epidemic model with nonlinear cross-diffusion, Nonlinear analysis: real world appli-
cations, vol 12 (5), 2011, 2888–2903

• Study the formation of materials with regular periodic interconnected microstruc-
tures. Ref: Modeling of reaction-diffusion processes of synthesis of materials with
regular (periodic) microstructure, Open Ceramic, v6, 2021, 100088 Reference 2
Transient diffusion with moving heat source Objective to study the temperature
distribution due to a moving heat source. Potential application - 3d printing/additive
manufacturing.
Impedance spectroscopy of microstructures Impedance spectroscopy is an experi-
mental technique for materials characterization. This is used to quantify the contribution
of various constituents of a given heterogeneous systems to its electrical behavior and to
understand mechanisms of surface reactions, kinetics of reactions and mass transport. Ob-
jective is to numerically evaluate the impedance of polycrystals. Ref: A fast and accurate
numerical technique for impedance spectroscopy of microstructures, Journal of the Elec-
trochemical Society, v169, 2022, 020543. Reference 3
