Ans: -
17. In poem ‘Water’, who opposed the Kamma landlords? What did she use to oppose them?
Ans: -
II. Answer any FOUR of the following questions in about 60 words each. 4x3=12
18. Write a short note on Cormac Cullinan’s thoughts on separateness as quoted by Vandana Shiva.
Ans: - Vandana Shiva cites Cormac Cullinan to argue that the modern ecological crisis stems from the illusion of
separateness—the belief that humans exist apart from nature. Cullinan stresses that this mindset legitimises exploitation
and destroys ecological balance. Recognising our interdependence, he suggests, is essential for restoring harmony,
nurturing Earth’s rights, and sustaining life.
19. How does Dona Laura describe her own death in ‘A Sunny Morning’?
Ans: - In “A Sunny Morning,” Doña Laura narrates her supposed death in a poetic, exaggerated manner. She claims she
slowly faded away in sorrow, “like a flower kissed by frost,” growing weaker each day after losing her lover. She says her
grief was so great that it finally carried her to the grave—an embellished, fictional version meant to dignify her youthful
romance.
20. Describe the uniqueness of the poet’s love as expressed in ‘When You Are Old’.
Ans: - In “When You Are Old,” the poet describes his love as unique because, unlike others who admired the beloved
only for her “moments of glad grace” and beauty, he loved her for her “pilgrim soul” and the “sorrows of her changing face.”
His love is deep, spiritual, and enduring, valuing her inner being rather than her outward charm.
21. Write a note on the life of the foot in the shoe as described in the poem ‘To The Foot From Its Child’.
Ans: In “To the Foot from Its Child,” Neruda shows how the foot changes once it is put into a shoe. As a child, it was
free and happy, touching the ground and discovering the world. But in the shoe, it becomes trapped and must walk only
where life forces it to go. The poem shows how growing up limits the foot’s natural freedom.
22. ‘The poet creates heaven on earth’. Discuss this with reference to ‘Heaven, If You Are Not Here On Earth’
Ans: -In “Heaven, If You Are Not Here on Earth,” the poet says that heaven is not a far-away place but something we
create in our daily lives. Through love, joy, friendship, music, and harmony, people can build a heavenly world on earth
itself. The poet shows that beauty and happiness around us are enough to make our lives feel like heaven.
23. Why eating soup is dangerous in Japan, as narrated by George Mikes?
Ans: - In “Japan and Brazil in traveler’s eye,” George Mikes humorously says that eating soup in Japan is “dangerous”.
Because the custom of Japan is very different from Western manners. In Japan, people must sound loudly to show they
enjoy the soup. A foreigner who drinks it quietly may feel nervous, awkward, or afraid of making a mistake. The “danger” is
really the fear of breaking Japanese etiquette.
IV Answer any THREE of the following questions in about 100 words each. 3x4=12
24. What were the arguments put forth by the prisoner for not going out of the prison as in 'Too Dear!'?
Ans: - In “Too Dear!” the prisoner gives several simple but strong reasons for not leaving the prison. He says that outside
he has no work, no money, and no home to live in. If he is set free, he will have to struggle for food and shelter. Inside the
prison, however, he gets regular meals, a safe place to sleep, and does not have to worry about survival. He argues that
life in jail is actually more comfortable and secure for him than life outside. So he chooses to stay in prison rather than face
poverty and hardship in the real world.
25. ‘Do you agree that the play ' A Sunny Morning' deals with the human weakness for lying? Elucidate with suitable
examples.
Ans: - Yes, “A Sunny Morning” clearly shows the human weakness for lying, especially when lies make life sweeter.
Both Doña Laura and Don Gonzalo tell false stories about their past to hide their real identities and to protect their pride.
Doña Laura pretends that she died tragically of love, while Don Gonzalo says he left to fight bravely and forgot everything.
In reality, both are embarrassed by how life actually turned out. Their gentle lies help them keep the romantic beauty of
their youth alive. The play shows that people often lie not to harm others, but to comfort themselves.
26. How did the plantation owner's lifestyle change after the arrival of the old man in ‘The Gardener?
Ans: -
27. Discuss Borge's views on poetry.
Ans: - Borges believes that poetry is something so intimate and so essential. Poetry cannot be defined without
oversimplifying it. It would be like attempting to define the colour yellow, love and the fall of leaves in the autumn. Poetry is
the aesthetic act. Poetry is not the poem, for the poem may be nothing more than a series of symbols. Poetry is the poetic
act that takes place when the poet writes it, when the reader reads it and it always happens in a slightly different matter.
When the poetic act takes place, it seems to Borges that they become aware of it. Poetry is a magical, very serious and
unexplainable although not incomprehensible-event. If one doesn’t feel the poetic event upon reading it, the poet has
failed.
28. How did the POP campaign team trap Roof in ‘The Voter'?
Ans: -: “The Voter”,, the POP campaign leader visits Roof the night before the election. Though they know each other,
the meeting is serious and secret. The leader places five pounds on the floor and asks Roof to vote for Maduka, the POP
candidate. Roof is surprised but tempted by the money. He closes the door and accepts the bribe. To seal the deal, he
swears on the iyi, a local charm, that he will vote for Maduka. This meeting shows how money and pressure are used to
buy votes. Roof feels guilty but is caught between loyalty and personal gain.
29. ‘A humble vehicle like cycle can work wonders in empowering rural woman’. Explain with reference to ‘Where There Is
A Wheel.’
Ans: - In Where There Is A Wheel, the cycle is called a humble vehicle, but it brought big changes to rural women’s lives. It gave
them freedom, mobility, and confidence. Women could travel alone, attend literacy classes, and sell goods. They saved time and
money. The cycle helped them carry water, children, and produce. It reduced their dependence on men. Women felt proud and strong.
They trained others and joined rallies. The cycle became a symbol of progress. It helped women break social barriers and live with
dignity. This simple vehicle became a powerful tool for empowerment and change.

later working as a stage actor and comedian. ‘Making a Living’ is the first movie of his. It was made in 1918.

Revolution in his own way. This movie is also a comment on desperate employment and financial conditions
that were the result of Great Depression. It was released in the year 1936. Chaplin directed, produced, edited,
starred in and composed the music for the most of his films.

adversity. Many contain social and political themes as well as autobiographical elements. He received an
