Green IT Data Center
INTRODUCTION
Green Technology :
Use of technology in such a manner that it will not affect the environment and will not harm the natural resources. Green technology is also referred as Clean Technology. They should be environment friendly.
Why Green Technology in IT sector ?
The computer has three different stages and every stage of Computer creates environmental problems
Manufacturing Stage
Various electronic and non electronic components consumes electricity, raw materials and water, and generates hazardous waste and this increased carbon dioxide emissions and impact the environment.
Why Green Technology in IT sector ?
PC in Use
Every PC generates about a Ton of Carbon dioxide every year Energy Consumption increased day by day
Disposal stage
Computer components contain toxic materials and it polluting the earth and contaminating water at time of disposal
IT Data Center
IT data center consists of
Servers Cores and Processors Server Processing Capacity
Basic building Block of Data Center as shown in figure
Power from Utility is fed to switchgear
Switchgear distributes power in between IT infrastructure and Cooling Infrastructure.
Energy demands for data center is broadly classified among
Electrical Electrical
power for operation of IT devices and power to derive the cooling system
In an organization data center is one of the Largest
Consumer of Energy and it consumes 10 to 14 times
more electricity than normal office building.
Green Data Center Construction
Two Matrics are used to analyse the greenness of existing data center
Power Usage Effectiveness
A PUE B
A - Total Power Consumed in data Center Building B - Power Consumed by IT equipment
DATA Center Efficiency
DCIE = 1/PUE
Data center Green report is prepared using tool such as RACKWISE.
Advantages of Green IT data Center
Reduction in Energy Consumption
To prepare the organization for compliance with
future Regulations
To take advantages of pricing incentives, tax breaks and rebates
Development in IT companies towards Green IT data Center
Dynamic Smart Cooling Technology Developed by IBM
Distribute temperature sensors over data center servers. Power consumption of data center is reduced from 117 Kw to 72 Kw.
Started Big Green Innovation
To reduce Carbon emissions and energy efficient data center
Accenture Technology lab developed the data center
estimator for planning and strategic anlysis to decide how to green their data center.
Hara developed a software application called hara environmental and energy management
Provide ways to cut greenhouse and waste
Emerson opens a solar energy based data Center
31 percent energy efficient as compared to traditional data center.
Use more than 550 solar Panels, generate more Than 100 kW of energy,80 percent construction waste is reused.
Energy used by googles data center is about half of
energy used by typical data center.
HP Labs done a case study in which an anaerobic digestor associated with diary having 10,000 cows able to provide power for a 1 MW data center.
Dell started plans like Green Grid Plan, Climate savers
Plan and 80plus plan.
Green Grid Plan to improve data Center Efficiency. Climate Savers Plan concentrated on power consumption characterstics
and power management features of individual IT components.
80plus plan helps to improve the computer power supplies efficiency
B.T. signed one of the largest renewable energy deal by
which it will save the carbon that is equivalent to amount
of carbon generated by 300,000 households in U.K.
B.T. has also taken steps towards Virtualisation and reduced its 1500 server data centers to 100 server.
IBM works with Syracuse University and New York state
to use smarter technologies in the new data center and it
is expecting that these data center uses 50 percent less energy as compare to typical data center which will make it one of the greenest computer center in operation
CONCLUSION
Green Data Center are more energy efficient as
compared to typical data center and Recent IT
trends is to use natural resources efficiently to cope up their energy demand which produces minimum carbon emission.
