Calque S

Calques, also known as loan translations, are words or expressions borrowed from another language through a literal translation. English receives many calques from French, such as "free verse" from "vers libre". German has also contributed calques to English like "antibody" from "Antikörper" and "earworm" from "Ohrwurm". Calques can also come from Latin, like "commonplace" from "locus communis", and other languages including Spanish, Greek, Swedish, and Dutch. Languages also adopt calques from English through loan translations.
