WHAT IS ARTICLE?
An article is a word that combines with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. The article in English are the, a or an and in some context some. Two types of article: Indefinite articles Definite articles
a and an Used for indefinite singular count nouns some Used for indefinite plural count nouns or non-count nouns
A noun is indefinite when you and your listener do not have a specific person, place or thing in mind. Examples: Give me a book. -which is not specify what book is to be given.

the Used for either definite singular and plural count nouns or non-count nouns. A noun is definite when you and your listener both know which person, place or thing you are talking about. Examples: Give me the book. -it refers to a specific book whose identity is known.
Used a before consonant sound Used an before vowel sound
It is the sound, not the letter that determine whether to use a or an.
Examples: Im reading a book. It is an exciting story. !!! Do not confuse with the first letter: o an honest, an umbrella, an apple o a university, a European
1) Use no article or some with plural count nouns or non-count nouns that are indefinite. Example :
I need to buy some food.
2) To identify someone or something use; a or an for singular count nouns Example: Hes a chef.
No article for plural count nouns or non-count nouns Example : Theyre beans, Im making soup.
3) To make general statement with plural count nouns or non-count nouns use; No article or some -I like some stories but a lot of them are boring.
4) Use definite articles the for nouns that are definite: a)a person, place or thing which is unique/only one -The moon was shining brightly b)The context makes it clear which person, place or thing you mean -A: Who is she? B: Shes the teacher. c)The noun is mentioned for the second time. -They ate a cake. The cake was delicious. d) A phrase or adjective -He was the best hunter in the country.
5) Adjectives often go directly before a noun: We read the first story in the book. 6) Adjectives go between article and noun: He has some beautiful old books.
Wrong : Golden Train is an express train which runs from London to Paris each day. Correct : The Golden Train is an express train which runs from London to Paris each day. Use the before the names of ships and trains, even if they do not form part of the name itself. But when the name of particular type of vehicle is used to name a means of a travel, there is no definite article. e.g. We are going to Delhi by train.
Wrong : Switzerland is an European country.
Correct : Switzerland is a European country. A or an must be used before words which begin with a vowel sound
Wrong : The Paris is a big city.
Correct : Paris is a big city. If the noun is proper it will take no article. Note that a proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or thing. Examples are: Sam, Mary, India, Paris, London
Wrong : The iron is a useful metal. Correct : Iron is a useful metal.
Articles are not used with material nouns. Examples : gold, silver, iron, rice
Wrong : Do you sell eggs by kilo or by dozen? Correct : Do you sell eggs by the kilo or by the dozen? the is used in measuring expressions beginning with by.
