NGO Roles in Environmental Protection

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are legally constituted groups created by individuals or organizations that are independent of any government and are not conventional for-profit businesses. NGOs maintain their non-governmental status even if partially funded by governments by excluding government representatives from membership. NGOs generally pursue wider social and environmental aims and have played a critical role in raising awareness of environmental issues and pushing governments to take action. Some key environmental NGOs in India include BAIF, which works on afforestation and watershed management, and the Centre for Science and Environment in New Delhi, which conducts research on pollution, forests, wildlife, land and water issues.
