Television in India

• Television first came to India named as


doordarshan (DD) on September 15 , 1959 as the
national television network of India.
• The programmed telecasted through doordarshan
comprised of family dramas,serial based on
history and informative programmes.
• Daily soaps like Hum Log (1984) and
mythological dramas like Ramayana (1987-88)
and Mahabharata (1988-89)were televised ,
millions of viewers stayed glued to their sets.
Indian private channels
• In 1992 , the government liberalized its markets,
opening them up to cable television .

• Now India has about couple of hundred channels


but the mostly viewed channels are ZEE, SONY
AND STAR channels.

• Recently few new channels gave Indians a fresh


breath of life such as COLOURS , NDTV
IMAGINE.
Daily soaps

• Television in India is a huge industry and has thousands of


programmes in all the states of India.

• The small screen has produced numerous celebrities .

• TV soaps are extremely popular with indian families


especially with housewives and working women.

• Several small screen actors have made it big in Bollywood.


• Approximately half of all Indian households
own a television. .
• The daily soaps are the main revenue earners
of the Indian television industry.
• The daily soaps have found widespread
popularity with the Indian television
audience.

• TV soaps represent a medium that can influence
positive change.
• soaps impart traditional values &Indian culture.
• Soap operas where women find a platform to
address social change.
• In each of the soap operas broadcast today, the
culture of joint families, female subservience and
moral values are the central themes.
Conclusion
After the analysis we will conclude that
TRP’s are increased because daily soaps
are viewed specially by housewives to
pass their time by viewing such serials not
knowing in what direction they will led
them and what thinking will develop in
their mind.
