What are prime numbers?
• Prime numbers are natural numbers ( the
numbers 1, 2, 3... ) that are divisible only by 1
and itself and Number Theory is the branch of
mathematics that studies them.

• Obs.: 1 is not included.

• Exemple: 3 is a prime number, but 4 is not,

since 4 is divisible by 2.
Sequence of prime numbers
• Some estimates

• n ln(n) + n ln(ln(n-1)) < p(n) < n ln(n) + n ln(ln(n))

Where p(1) is the first prime number, p(2) is the

second one and so on.

Relationed problems
• Riemann hypothesis
Prize of 1 million of dollars

• Goldbach conjecture:
Every even number greater or equal to 4 is the
sum of two prime numbers.
Aplications
• Cryptography
With 17.425.170 digits, 257885161 – 1 is one of the
greatest prime numbers ever found.
