Basic Splice Loss Estimation
• The splice point is analyzed using HDCM to
measure core offset and deformation to
provide an estimate of the splice loss in
decibels.
• This estimation is based on physical
characteristics … a true light loss
measurement should be made using a light
source / power meter.

Evaluation of the splice
• The evaluation of the splice should be done by the
estimated splice loss and the external appearance
at the splice point.
• The following splice should be rejected, even if
the estimated splice loss is sufficiently low.

Evaluation of the splice
• The following splices are acceptable, even if the
external appearance at the splice point does not
look good.

Contribution to Splice Loss
• Two categories of splice Loss
• Extrinsic Loss :
• Loss factors that are induced by the splicing
methods and preparation techniques
• Intrinsic Loss :
• Loss factors determined by fiber characteristics

Guidelines to achieve
High Quality Splice
• Prepare Work area :
• Maintain a clean,dust free environment
• Keep a well organized workstation
• Cable ends shall be cleaned & organized
• Avoid extreme temperature and humidity

Guidelines to achieve High
Quality splice
• Fiber Preparation :
• Appropriate strip length
• Clean bare glass surface
• Minimize the time bare fiber is exposed to the
environment
• Avoid touching the bare glass
• Proper cleave length
• Obtain low fiber end-angle ( typical < 1 deg)

Precautions while using
Fusion splice
• Never touch the electrode because a high voltage
of 6000 Volts is generated
• Make sure to ground the main body during use
• Fusion splicer is a precision instrument, protect it
against dust,dirt and moisture
