Lesson 22
Running Fix
•Running Fix - A position determined by
crossing non-simultaneous lines of position
(LOP’s) that are advanced or retired to a
common time.
•Used in circumstances when it is difficult to get
two LOP’s at once.
(E.g. Low visibility, isolated lights)
Running Fix
•Less reliable than a fix.
•Part fix and part DR.
•Ignores current, wind, bad steering,
etc.

STEP #3
• Open Tank
your dividers to the distance between your DR positions.
Running FIX
• Mark the point along your trackline that is an equivalent distance
from the point where the first LOP crossed the trackline.

Running Fix
You can also plot a
running fix using
two navaids.
Advance the first
LOP to the time of
the LOP of the
second navaid.
Running Fix
A circle of position (range from a navaid) can
also be advanced for use in a running fix.
Running Fix
Advance the navaid the
direction of your
course & the distance
between your DRs.
Redraw your first
range circle from the
advanced navaid.

Estimated Position (EP)
The most probable position of the vessel
determined from incomplete data or data of
questionable accuracy.
A DR with an extra piece of information.
Used when you can’t obtain a second LOP.
Estimated Position (EP)
There are several ways to plot EP’s, depending on
the “extra information” available.
When using a single LOP, the EP is the point on
the LOP closest to your DR position.
Estimated Position (EP)
•Draw a line segment
perpendicular to the
LOP that intersects
the DR position.
•The point where the
segment meets the
LOP is the EP
EP with a Known Current
At 0900 your position is LAT 37°00.0'N, LONG
75°30.0'W. You are on course 270°T at 6 knots.
You estimated the current to be 137°T at 1.0 knot.
