Understanding Random Sampling Methods

Random sampling involves selecting a sample from a population where each member has an equal chance of being chosen. There are two main types: the lottery method, where numbers are assigned to each population member and drawn randomly; and using a random number table, where numbers are randomly selected from rows in a table. An example of each method is provided. While random sampling reduces researcher bias, it can be difficult to implement for large populations and time-consuming if a random number table needs to be generated. The simplest approach is lottery sampling.

What is Random Sampling

 A random sampling is also known as – simple random sampling.

 It is a sample taken from a population where each member of the population has an
equal chance of being selected for the sample.
Types of Random Sampling

Lottery Method Random Number Table

 Simplest method of selecting a random  The use of random numbers is an

numbering the population.
 In this method, each member of the
population has to number systematically
and in a consequent manner by writing
each number on a separate piece of
paper.
 These pieces of paper are mixed and put
into a box and then numbers are drawn
out of the box in a random manner.
Example - Lottery Method
 We identify units in a
population In this case we will
use 500.
 We wish to select 50 units out
of these 500
 Assign numbers 1-500 on
standardized slips (paper)
 Place the pieces of paper in a
box and shuffle
 Pick 50 slips
 Once the 50 are selected –
the units with the numbers on
the slips will constitute a
random sample
Example - Random Number Table

 We will use a list of students


200.
 We use a table and we
randomly pick 2 numbers from
each row ( the numbers on the
table should be between 1-
200 and cannot be used
twice)
 After choosing two numbers of
each row we will have 20
people to constitute a random
sample
 Numbers selected look as

Conclusion

 We consider that the random sampling is a good method to use it gives


less room for researcher bias.
 However, application of random sampling methods in practice can be quite
difficult due to the need for the complete list of relevant population and it is
time consuming if you have to generate a table for members if you have a
large sample size.
 The simplest way of doing the random sampling – is using the lottery
sample. With this method we can even use technology and reduce human
interaction.
