Ethics

 Moral principles that govern a person's behaviour or the conducting of an


activity.
 Ethics or moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy that involves
systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and
wrong conduct.
 They affect how people make decisions and lead their lives.
 Ethics is concerned with what is good for individuals and society.
 Ethics is a normative science as it deals with norms by which we can judge
human actions.
 Ethics does not deal with facts. Rather, it deals with values and principles.
Therefore, it is clear that ethics is concerned with judgments of value, while
natural science deals with judgments of facts
Moral

 Concerned with the principles of right and wrong behaviour.


 Moral philosophy is the branch of philosophy that contemplates what is
right and wrong. It explores the nature of morality and examines how
people should live their lives in relation to others.
 Moral values such as integrity, determination, loyalty, truthfulness, honesty,
giving respect to each other etc should be inherited by every individual.
 moral values help us distinguish between what's right and wrong, good or
bad for you as well as society.
Moral

 A moral agent is a person who has the ability to discern right from wrong
and to be held accountable for his or her own actions.
 A moral dilemma is a conflict in which you have to choose between two
or more actions and have moral reasons for choosing each action

 Personal ethics
 Is any system that has been chosen in some way as a moral guide in the
particular life style.
 Social Ethics:
 Standards that govern how members of a society are to deal with each other
on issues such as fairness, justice, poverty and the rights of the individual.
 OR The rightness of an action is based on the customs and norms of a particular
society or community (e.g., the usual way things are done around here)
Types of Ethics

 Religious Ethics:
 Most religions have an ethical component, often derived from purported
supernatural revelation or guidance. •
 According to Simon Blackburn, "For many people, ethics is not only tied up with
religion, but is completely settled by it. Such people do not need to think too much
about ethics, because there is an authoritative code of instructions, a handbook of
how to live.“
 Religious Ethics:
 Ethics, which is a major branch of philosophy, encompasses right conduct and good
life.
 It is significantly broader than the common conception of analysing right and wrong.
A central aspect of ethics is "the good life", the life worth living or life that is simply
satisfying.
 Some assert that religion is necessary to live ethically.
Types of Ethics

 Business Ethics
 Business ethics is the study of good and evil, right and wrong, and just and unjust
actions in business.
 Although all managers face difficult ethical conflicts, applying clear guidelines
resolves the vast majority of them.
 Ethical traditions that apply to business support truth telling, honesty, protection
of life, respect for rights, fairness, and obedience to law.
 Eliminating unethical behaviour may be difficult, but knowing the rightness or
wrongness of actions is usually easy.

Why People Act Unethically

 The person’s ethical standards are different from those of society as a

 In many instances, both reasons exist.
Importance of Ethics

 Ethics is important to every society as it plays a critical role in shaping the


individuals behaviours within a society.
 Since the dawn of human civilization, men have sought to keep human
conduct in check to preserve the peace of society
 In other words, ethics in today's society has eroded(gradually ending).
Importance of Ethics

 Primarily it is the individual, the consumer, the employee or the human


social unit of the society who benefits from ethics.
 In addition ethics is important because of the following:
 Satisfying Basic Human Needs:
 Being fair,
 honest and
 ethical is one the basic human needs.
