History and Evolution of Baybayin

Baybayin was the original writing system of the Philippines used to write short texts like poetry and announcements, usually carved into natural materials like bamboo and pots. It developed from symbols and patterns used by early Filipino ancestors for communication. During Spanish colonization in the 16th century, Spanish priests tried but failed to decode baybayin and instead replaced it with the Latin alphabet. While the first book printed in the Philippines in 1593 contained baybayin, it fell out of use as the new generation adopted the Latin alphabet to adapt to colonial society. Advancements in technology also contributed to baybayin being replaced over time.
