Overview of the Muscular System

The muscular system is responsible for movement of the body and is composed of 700 named muscles attached to bones. There are three main types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, which is voluntary and moves bones; cardiac muscle, which is only found in the heart and is involuntary; and visceral muscle, which is involuntary and found inside organs to move substances through them.

of the heart, digestive organs, and
blood vessels.
Functions

 The maintenance of
posture and body
position.

substances inside the
body.
 The generation of
body heat.
Muscle Types
o Visceral Muscle

o Cardiac Muscle

o Skeletal Muscle
VISCERAL MUSCLE
Found inside of organs like
the stomach, intestines, and
blood vessels.
The weakest of all muscle
tissues.
Makes organs contract to move
substances through the organ.
known as involuntary muscle
 “smooth muscle” is often used to
describe visceral muscle

 connected together by special
junctions called intercalated
disks.

muscle tissue
