Introduction to SPSS
• SPSS Statistics is a software package used for statistical
analysis.
• Package was produced by SPSS Inc., it was acquired
by IBM in 2009. The current versions (2015) are officially
named IBM SPSS Statistics.
• The software name originally stood for
Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), reflecting
the original market, although the software is now popular in
other fields as well, including marketing and health sciences
etc.
Why to prefer SPSS over Excel –
• Easy access to descriptive statistics and frequencies.
• Wider variety of charts & graphs.
• Better, more flexible pivot tables.
• Full set of statistical tests.
• Easy to run similar reports and graphics for subsets.
• Labels instead of codes in your reports.
• Accurate results when some data is missing.
• Helps you spot data-entry errors or unusual data points.
• Easy import functions.
• Unlimited rows.
• Using SPSS saves time and increases productivity.
• SPSS makes it easy to understand statistical results.
Excel is better for many because -
For most people, the learning curve is much less
steep with Excel.
SPSS expensive.
Charts are easier to manage/control in Excel.
More flexible use of functions.
Types of Scales
• Nominal- objects or people are categorized
according to some criterion (gender, job category)
• Ordinal- Categories which are ranked according to
characteristics (income- low, moderate, high)
• Interval- contain equal distance between units of
measure- but no zero (calendar years,
temperature)
• Ratio- has an absolute zero and consistent
intervals (distance, weight)

PSPP
• PSPP is an Open Source software performing
similar functions as that of SPSS.
• SAS, R are other popular statistical softwares.
